GOD’S PURPOSE FOR EVERYONE; INHERIT THE LIFE OF THE SON OF GOD WHO HAS HIS FATHER’S HOLY SPIRIT

Man is at present going full speed toward the fullness of science and technology. The optimum of science endeavors becomes theology, the study of God. Metaphysics, the aftermath of physics which is the basic science discipline, begins shortly after physics has began.  Metaphysics exist as a psychological response to any concept of physics such as energy is .5 times mass times velocity. If one state that the boxer  is fighting with more intensity or that the boxer has more momentum in the fight, than this would be of a metaphysical nature. To say that Jesus commanded the wind to crease and it did is also a metaphysical act because he did it mentally.

Scientist are already working to interface the mind with machines. Where are the limits to this technology? Is it that we actually arrive at a metaphysical state that humans have the ability of mind controlling matter. Can science and technology move humans into a spirit state liken to the observer in our mind’s eye, but instead the universe is the theater for our mind’s eye. Strangely enough, the observer in one’s mind can not be detected by even the most sophisticated devices, alone with the fact that many people have had out of the body experiences. This makes me think about what Henry Ford said; “If it sputters than it will run.”

It is evident that God rewards man and encourages man to seek knowledge in the physical and the spiritual realms. Although, the scriptures says that there is a divide between man and God that man can not cross because there shall always be corruption in man’s concepts and spiritual laws. Only through the salvation of Jesus Christ Who is perfectly Righteous in the eyes of God can man enter the Kingdom of God. This is a pure spiritual state. Man’s final existence.

Experts can argue about the limit in which man can achieve through science and technology, but acts of the Father and acts of man becomes entwined before anticipating the final act of man or is it the final act God. But I am not baffled because Faith in Jesus and the Word of God takes care of everything in my life…one thought after another thought…precept after precept until all mysteries are revealed.

“Science without religion is blind; religion without science is lame;” Albert Einstein. Of course, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is an exception.

Matthew 25:34

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Has the Big Bang Gone Bust?

Did the universe begin to exist or has it always existed? RTB argues that strong biblical and scientific evidence point to a beginning. We would say the Bible claims that the universe began to exist and that science can address the assertion. This notion of a beginning represents a significant, testable claim of Christianity, and the standard model of cosmology—an inflationary big bang—definitely points to a beginning.

However, scientists occasionally publish articles claiming that new research disproves the big bang or, more pointedly, indicates that the universe has existed forever. I expect to see more of these types of articles in the future. Thus, I want to articulate some key points related to the question of a beginning and to think through the issues to help you understand the nature of the problem and the proposed answers.

Theological and Scientific Background

From a biblical perspective, the doctrine of creation ex nihilo states that there was nothing but God and, by means of his incalculable wisdom and infinite power alone, God brought the universe (all matter, energy, time, and space) into existence from nothing. That the early church fathers placed this doctrine alongside Jesus’ incarnation, death, and resurrection illustrates its importance. One straightforward implication of creation ex nihilo is that the universe began to exist.

Big bang cosmology provides strong scientific support for the idea of a beginning. Albert Einstein’s development of the theory of general relativity (GR), Edwin Hubble’s discovery of the expansion of the universe, and Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose’s space-time theorems all point strongly to a beginning for the universe.

Originally formulated in the 1960s and 1970s, the space-time theorems show that as a star collapses to form a black hole, GR leads to an end of time inside the black hole. Then, given the expansion of the universe, these theorems demonstrate that enough mass exists to force a similar conclusion for the entire universe when time is run backwards. Consequently, the theorems prove that a singularity (a point at which the density becomes infinite) marks the beginning of the universe’s existence.

An Important Caveat

In order for the theorems to genuinely prove a beginning for the universe, all the necessary conditions must be met. Specifically, GR must govern the dynamics of the universe. In the moments leading up to the singularity (when running time backwards) the energy conditions and scale of the universe demand a quantum mechanical description. However, GR is fundamentally a classical theory that includes no quantum mechanical aspects. Stated another way, the precise moment when the space-time theorems say a singularity exists corresponds to the moment when our confidence that GR describes the dynamics of the universe stops. In order to truly answer the question (scientifically speaking) of whether the universe began to exist, scientists need a quantum theory of gravity—something they currently lack.

Does Quantum Gravity Negate the Big Bang?

An important question to consider is: Will the true quantum theory of gravity show that the universe has existed forever? At this time, the quick answer is that scientists don’t know, because all attempts to formulate such a theory are speculative and no experiments discriminate between them and the standard cosmology.

One point worthy of note is that none of these quantum gravity approaches negate inflationary big bang cosmology. They agree with the standard measurements: the abundance of elements in the universe, the cosmic background radiation, the expansion history, structure formation (such as galaxies, stars, and planets), and so forth. In fact, the latest results from Planck confirm that “the standard model of cosmology remains an excellent description of the universe.” The existence of the singularity is the only place where the two approaches depart, and each approach differs in the details.

Several research articles argue for a beginning-less universe based on attempts to formulate a quantum theory of gravity. In almost all of those articles the researchers acknowledge that scientists still have not found the quantum theory of gravity but they are trying to find useful approximations.

In one, a recent article in Physics Letters B, the classical trajectories of general relativity were replaced with quantum Bohmian trajectories. By definition, Bohmian trajectories cannot cross, and this nature removes the singularity in the earliest moments of the universe, meaning that time extends to the infinite past.1 In a second research paper, string theory, one prominent approach to a quantum theory of gravity, imposes symmetries on the universe and these symmetries effectively eliminate any of the infinities required by a singularity.2 A third proposal invokes loop quantum gravity, which implies a maximum “compressibility” to the universe such that a previous contracting phase bounces, giving rise to our big bang universe.3 Other approaches use endless cycling, black holes, colliding branes, extra dimensions, andendless static states.

The main point to keep in mind at this time is that scientists currently have no way to know which (if any) of these quantum gravity possibilities is correct, or even if a quantum theory of gravity exists. This uncertainty means two things. First, we need not fear that scientists have discovered that the universe was eternal in the past. Second, we should express appropriate caution regarding any claims that science has established a beginning to the universe.

History Points to a Beginning

In the midst of this uncertainty, looking to the past provides a helpful guide. At the beginning of the twentieth century, based on ideas originally developed by Isaac Newton, scientists thought the universe had existed forever. Einstein’s development of GR and Hubble’s measurement of expansion moved scientific thought toward a beginning. However, the proposal of a steady-state cosmology and an oscillating cosmology mid-century both seemed to remove the need for a beginning, only to be invalidated by further observations. By late-century the space-time theorems strongly affirmed the need for a beginning. At about the start of this century, the multiverse seemed to tip the balance back toward an eternal universe until further research demonstrated that inflationary multiverses still seem to require a beginning. For a more in-depth discussion of these issues, listen to my interview with Phil Harper on Premier Radio’s Unbelievable? (hosted by Justin Brierley).

What Does It All Mean?

In the last 125 years of cosmology history there have been many attempts to prove an eternal physical realm. Thus far, all those endeavors ended with the conclusion pointing to a universe with a beginning in the finite past. My bet is that all these quantum gravity approaches will ultimately reveal evidence for a universe with a genuine beginning.

So let’s keep searching.

How Far Can Science Take Us? What, When, Where Hell Comes In?

Most people today around the world believe that science can take the humanity all the way to an utopia. At present, we are aware that some hell exist on the Earth. Science and technology has relieved much pain and suffering alone with extending the lives of many people. So, what is the finality of it all? What are the limits of technology? It appears that science and technology can not be limited by any knowledgeable, prophetic person. If and when technology takes man into a higher conscientious; living in the spirit, than some matter could still need technological attention for support or desires of the conscientious entities. God’s Spirit Of Truth Who proceeds from God in the universe has no end; therefore, as long as man exist in spirit or with body they shall be governed by God’s Truth in all things.

It appears with some evidence that God’s limit on man’s scientific and technological endeavors is a total wipe out of the world. Experts differs as to when is total wipe out going to happen. Many Believers are convinced that nuclear war shall destroy the world soon relative to the cosmic time scale. Another group alone with myself believe that “The Great Tribulations” shall begin and last 7 years. Prior to the tribulations, all true believers of Christ Jesus shall be ruptured up into the heavens to be with Jesus, the Son of God. following the seven years of the most horrible events since the creation of man followed by 1000 years of peace that acts similar to the concept of the Catholic’s purgatory, God shall destroy heaven and Earth, and a new heaven and Earth shall come into being with His Son, Jesus, being the King.

Reflecting on hell, I believe that souls from Earth shall not burn forever in a very hot fire, but some souls shall be destroyed in an Eternal Fire, meaning that only God can destroy a soul that He has created. Since God is Love I do not believe that God would create a soul that He know that He would condemn to burn in fire forever. I would rather believe that God recycles souls into another heaviness; another discipline for leaning and developing unto God’s Righteousness. I do believe that the souls of the one third Angeles who rebelled against God in Heaven shall be destroyed in the Eternal Fire which is the final Hell. If you feel that you might be condemn to hell than you are probably one of the rebellious Angeles in spirit.

2 Peter 3

But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

IS THERE ONLY ONE WAY TO GOD’S KINGDOM; THE RECEIVING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Almost one half the people in America believe that there are many ways to the Kingdom of God, implying that there are many Saviors liken unto Muhammad and Buddha plus thousands of Idols. The scriptures teach that Jesus, the Son of God, is the One who all must pass through Him in order to enter the Kingdom of God. It’s not Jesus is going to be standing at the gates of Heaven embodied, and verifying each person’s credentials. The scriptures are referring to our spirit and the Spirit of Jesus being alike in nature. Jesus is the One Who brought God’s Holy Spirit to this world. Jesus was crucified for our sins thru allowing person to be sinless upon accepting Christ Jesus as their Love and Savior. In other words, Jesus makes us perfect in the eye’s of God for He was perfect. God require perfection.

Jesus was resurrected from the grave signifying that all that follow and obey God’s Son shall be resurrected in their state of mind and spirit. All other religious entities has not been resurrected by God from the dead. Muhammad and Buddha are still in their graves. I oppose no other religion, but to proclaim my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God has moved me to believe that His Word shall prevail, and I don’t have to protect God, nor the Son of God. I have been moved to believe that toward the end all believer shall begin drifting from their camps, and moving into the Son of God Camp even if Jesus is known by another name the Spirit shall be that of Jesus; what God requires. His names are already Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, Justice, and the Great Physician.

John 14:6

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by                   me.

John 14:26

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

JESUS IS ALIVE

The scriptures of the bible are many; each has an importance in a practical sense to each life, and most often not considered is the integral importance to the whole biblical message that is firstly the identification of our Savior, Jesus Christ and secondly the speaking to your conscience. The bible truly has all answers to our lives with the main priority being a joy-giver and keeper of your joy who is your spirit.

The Son of God came to Earth of a virgin birth predicated on the fact that God is His Father. Jesus grew and waxed strong in the Spirit of God. After which, He performed miracles until crucified for our sins followed by His resurrection from the dead and ascension into the heavens. Now, we await his Second Coming.  During the meantime the Spirit of Jesus lives inside each of us, even the Spirit of Truth Who processes from God in the world testifies of Jesus, the Son of God.

Having an open mind, knowledge of the Word of God, the biblical scriptures, comes alive when one talks with the Lord while expecting an answer when patience is displayed with strong faith and serious meditation.

Luke 6:47; “Anyone who comes to me and listens to my words and obeys them—I will show you what he is like.”

Song of Solomon 8:13; “O my beloved, living in the gardens, how wonderful that your companions may listen to your voice; let me hear it too.”
1 Corinthians 15:45; “The Scriptures tell us that the first man, Adam, was given a natural, human body but Christ* is more* than that, for he was life-giving Spirit.”
For every question asked of God each scripture weights by it’s portion which verifies each answer that one receives from God. Each scripture has a role to play in the answer from the Lord Jesus liken unto giving the what’s, when’s, how’s, and where’s. The bible also can read you when it comes alive in your mind and begin giving unsolicited answers to problems that you have. This is from the Life of the Lord.
If one accepts and have faith that Jesus is Lord and Savior of their life at the present time than each and everyone can hear the Lord speak. If one obeys the voice of the Lord, than one shall receive Eternal Life. This is not a secret in the bible, rather it is a promise from God.

John 10:27; “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”

Have Quantum Physicists Disproved the Big Bang?

Since February 10, the media have been abuzz with the story that two quantum physicists have “corrected” Einstein’s theory of general relativity to demonstrate that the big bang never happened. The two physicists—Ahmed Farag Ali (a professor at Benha University in Egypt) and Saurya Das (a professor at University of Lethbridge in Alberta)—claim the universe might have existed forever. Their paper, “Cosmology from Quantum Potential,” first appeared as a preprint in April 2014 and was published in Physics Letters B in February 2015.1 Anyone can read the entire paper free of charge.

As you can well imagine, concerned believers have bombarded my Facebook pagewith questions. Has one of Christianity’s core beliefs (“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”) just been falsified? Did the Bible get it wrong about the beginning of the universe? Is God irrelevant? Are astronomers mistaken about the big bang? Have the space-time theorems been invalidated?

The short answer to all these questions is no. The longer answer is that there are at least four reasons to doubt the vanquishing of the big bang.

****

Reason #1

Physics Letters B offers authors considerable latitude to speculate and engage in “what if” physics. Published works there do not necessarily need to pertain to known physical reality. In fact, the paper was published in the journal’s theory section, not in the astrophysics and cosmology section.

Reason #2

The first two lines of the abstract are the most important thing to note about the paper: “It was shown recently that replacing classical geodesics with quantal (Bohmian) trajectories gives rise to a quantum corrected Raychaudhuri equation (QRE).” A geodesic is simply the shortest possible path between two points along a curved or flat space-time surface. In cosmology, a freely moving or falling particle always travels along a geodesic.

Cosmologists use geodesics to build models of the universe. These models establish that there is a “point,” or an infinitely small volume, in the universe’s past where all the geodesics converge, giving rise to a singularity. This singularity is: (1) the beginning of the universe, including the beginning of space and time; and (2) the basis of the space-time theorems,2 which imply that a causal agent beyond space and time is responsible for bringing matter, energy, space, and time into existence.

Quantal Bohmian trajectories are, by definition, paths along which particles travel where it is impossible for the paths to cross each other or converge. Farag Ali and Das’ starting assumption—that geodesics can be replaced wholesale by quantal Bohmian trajectories—rules out the possibility of a singularity occurring at any time or anywhere in the universe. Thus, the conclusion that their cosmological model “gets rid of the big bang singularity and predicts an infinite age of our universe”3 is not a conclusion; it’s simply a restatement of their starting assumption.

Reason #3

The observable predictions made by Farag Ali and Das’ cosmological model are largely indistinct from those made by big bang creation models. The only possible distinctive is a prediction of a tiny mass for the graviton; standard particle physics models predict a zero mass. (The graviton is a hypothetical elementary particle thought to mediate the force of gravity. Physicists believe it to be massless because gravity appears to have an unlimited range of operation.) However, the proposed tiny graviton mass is still orders of magnitude below what any conceivable instrument could possibly detect.

Without a testable distinctive, their model as it presently stands is scientifically irrelevant. Farag Ali and Das fully acknowledge this weakness, pointing out that their work is in a preliminary stage of development. They also acknowledge that theirs is not a quantum gravity model. A quantum gravity model would explain the operation of the universe when it was younger than 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 seconds, when not just gravity but also quantum mechanical effects influenced the universe’s dynamics. So far, scientists lack experimental, observational, and theoretical tools to explore this early era. Most physicists believe such tools are forever beyond their reach.

Reason #4

Farag Ali and Das’ proposal appeals to David Bohm’s quantum potential theory. Bohm (1917–1992) was a quantum physicist who in later life became known for intense interest in New Age mysticism and the paranormal. Bohm believed a deeper reality existed beneath quantum mechanics, namely a sub-quantum field called the quantum potential. In Bohm’s quantum potential theory, space, time, and causality are no longer the dominant factors determining the relationships among the universe’s physical components. Such redefinitions of space, time, and/or causality allow both New Age practitioners and physicists like Farag Ali and Das to argue against the beginning of the universe and the existence and operation of God.

John Boslough in his book, Stephen Hawking’s Universe, quotes Bohm concerning his mystical physics:

By understanding Eastern mysticism…physicists can free their minds, at least briefly, from this self-created prison [of imposing discrete categories on experience] in order to attain an instant of scientific creation.4

Boslough then recounts Hawking’s acerbic response:

I think it is absolute rubbish….The universe of Eastern mysticism is an illusion….A physicist who attempts to link it with his own work has abandoned physics.5

****

The impossibility of studying the first 10-43 seconds of the universe’s history gives rise to speculative papers like Farag Ali and Das’. One can always appeal to the unknowable to argue against something’s existence. Philosophically, however, arguments regarding the universe’s origin, God’s existence, and God’s hand in creation must be founded on what scientists know, not on what we don’t know.

For example, though I have been married for 37 years, I still lack complete knowledge about my wife. Since I lack such complete knowledge, it could be said that I lack absolute proof of her existence. I could appeal to what I do not know about her to speculate that perhaps she is just an illusion or some kind of sophisticated hologram. The counter to such speculation would be additional experiments and observations to test the reality of my wife’s physical existence. If that additional testing consistently yields increasing evidence for her actual existence, I can confidently conclude that she really does exist.

The same methodology compels me to conclude that the God of the Bible exists, that the universe has an actual beginning, and that God created our universe of matter, energy, space, and time specifically for humanity’s benefit. Hebrews 11:6 promises that if we will diligently seek out the evidence for God, we will find it.

Q&A: Did God Make Time Stand Still for Joshua?

Kristine from Rogers, MN

In Joshua 10, Joshua prayed for the Sun to stand still and God answered his prayer and the Sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down for about a full day. In Isaiah 38, the Lord provided a sign to Hezekiah that he would live longer by having the shadow cast by the Sun go back 10 steps. What was going on here? Is there a hypernatural explanation for this?

****

Joshua 10 is a bit ambiguous about the nature of the “long day.” It is possible to interpret the event as an extra-long night rather than an extra-long day. In fact, most Old Testament scholars assert that the extra-long night is the most likely interpretation. Furthermore, the original Hebrew text does not require any adjustment in the positions or movements of the Sun, Moon, or Earth.

What the text demands is God bringing an extra period of light or darkness into the Valley of Aijalon. God could have brought about such effects through a supernatural meteorological event that blanketed the region with heavy darkness or refracted or reflected extra light into the desired location. Alternately, God could have shone his Shekinah glory into the Valley of Aijalon or used His “hand” to block out the Sun and Moon’s light.

Isaiah and the chroniclers describe a more outstanding miraculous event in Isaiah 38–39, 2 Kings 20, and 2 Chronicles 32. After the miraculous defeat of the Assyrian army, Judah’s King Hezekiah became deathly ill. The Lord healed him and gave him a sign to confirm his healing—moving the shadow of Hezekiah’s sundial back by 40 minutes.

This backward movement of sundial shadows was also witnessed in Babylon. Interestingly, the Babylonians recognized their god Marduk could not perform such a miracle. Therefore, they sent a delegation to Jerusalem to find out from the real God the reason for the event.

The miraculous movement of the sundial shadows could have occurred over the entire region extending from Jerusalem to Babylon or it may have been limited to just the cities of Jerusalem and Babylon. God could have manipulated meteorological conditions at the same time in both Babylon and Jerusalem. It is hard to imagine, however, God manipulating meteorological conditions so that sundials over the entire region between Jerusalem and Babylon would have their shadows shifted by 40 minutes without bringing about far more disturbing meteorological consequences. Alternatively, God could have temporarily shone some kind of transcendent light, like His Shekinah glory, into the cities of Jerusalem and Babylon or even upon the entire region between Jerusalem and Babylon.

Does Science Make the Case for God, or Not? (Part 1 of 2)

Does science make the case for God, or not? It depends on whom you ask. Author and TV host Eric Metaxas argued the affirmative position in a recent (December 2014)Wall Street Journal piece.1 A month later in response to Metaxas’ article, the New Yorker published an opposite position2 from theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss. Rather than weigh in with my perspective (I find science and the Christian faith to mutually reinforce one another), I want to draw some insight from each article in order to help engage the conversation more effectively. I’ll start by examining Krauss’ article, and in part two, I’ll address Metaxas’ original article.

Life Requires a Miracle

According to Krauss, Metaxas argues that “the appearance of life in the universe requires a miracle,” and given the “miraculous” conditions necessary for life, “we must have come from a miracle at the hand of God” Though he mischaracterizes Metaxas’ point, Krauss highlights an issue that I think Christians need to think about more deeply: how does God work in creation?

We tend to think of miracles as requiring a suspension of the laws of physics. Thus, if scientists find an explanation for some phenomena, then God must not have been involved. Such a position represents a weak theology of creation because the Bible often points to God’s use of the laws of physics to bring about miraculous ends.

Later in his article Krauss says, “Arguing that God exists because many cosmic mysteries remain is intellectually lazy in the extreme.” I could not agree more. If Christians appeal to the “miraculous” in areas where scientists lack understanding, two problems arise. First, the realm of God’s involvement in creation will steadily decrease over time as we continue to comprehend the universe more thoroughly. Second, when confronted with difficult-to-understand phenomena, an appeal to God’s hand brings scientific investigation to a grinding halt.

The Improbable Happens All the Time

Metaxas’ article delineates a number of circumstances necessary for life to exist in the universe and notes the improbability of them all occurring. Krauss for the most part grants that the probability of these events is small but disputes Metaxas’ claim that these low numbers point toward a God.

In his first main response to Metaxas’ article, Krauss highlights that almost anything that happens requires a highly improbable sequence of circumstances preceding it. While this point is technically true, for it to carry any weight two things must also be true. First, the event must be ordinary. For example, the odds of being dealt any five cards are roughly 1 in 2.6 million. However, a royal flush in spades beats any other poker hand. Getting dealt a royal flush in spades after a single deal is remarkable. Second, other avenues of achieving similar outcomes must exist. Only one way exists to get a royal flush in spades whereas numerous hands (1,098,240 to be exact) result in a single pair.

When Krauss points out in a strict fashion that everything is improbable, he assumes that human life is nothing special and that many different avenues could lead to something akin to humans. He speculates that, if not for the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, “maybe giant intelligent reptiles would be arguing about the existence of God today.” He notes that many exoplanets as well as moons of Jupiter and Saturn may host possible life sites. Additionally, scientists continue to discover life in environments previously thought incapable of sustaining life. While fascinating discoveries, none of these advances currently demonstrate that alternate routes lead to intelligent life. Logic dictates that we rely on known data to support a position rather than use speculative future finds.

In his second main response to Metaxas’ article, Krauss argues that the physical processes that we understand now may drive life to form. Astronomers find complex precursors to life in space, and the geophysical and chemical environment on early Earth may support their production and build-up. Perhaps one day scientists will understand how life originates and will discover that it does not require anything beyond the laws of physics. However, given the data at hand today, one can rationally defend a position that the evidence points toward a Divine hand, but the data do not force you to do so.

Credibility Matters

Krauss rightly identifies some noticeable errors in Metaxas’ statements. For example, Metaxas states that a change in the ratio of the strength of the electromagnetic force to the strong nuclear force of even one part in 100,000,000,000,000,000 would prevent star formation, or cause the universe to not exist. My reading of the scientific literature puts the fine-tuning more on the order of a fraction of a percent for star formation, and who really knows what it would take to prevent formation of universes? I point out Metaxas’ errors because they can destroy credibility (as Krauss’ critique makes clear), and credibility is one of the most useful tools a Christian has in trying to persuade those skeptical of the Christian faith.

In reading Krauss’ piece, it seems most of his arguments center on disputing that science proves the existence of God or requires beyond-the-laws-of-physics miracles. Perhaps Christians should spend more time championing (and participating in) the pursuit of good science and articulating that strong, rational reasons exist for believing in the God of the Bible. In doing so, we would inevitably find the resources to develop arguments that would more persuasively show skeptics how the best findings of science can—and do—fit comfortably with the Christian faith.

Blood Moons: An End-Times Sign? (Part 2 of 2)

Popular Bible preacher John Hagee has authored a book and produced a movie by the same name, Four Blood Moons (in theaters March 23 only). On the film’s website the San Antonio megachurch pastor states, “The heavens are ‘God’s billboard.’ He’s been sending signals to earth, and we haven’t been picking them up.” In part 1 of this series, as an astronomer I analyzed those “signals,” a series of four (tetrad) total lunar eclipses that supposedly ushers in prophetic activity ahead of the return of Christ. Now, as a student of Scripture and as one who believes in premillennial eschatology, I convey my primary, biblical criticism.

Biblical Concerns

1. Earth phenomena might be responsible for lunar darkening. Three biblical passages mention the Moon taking on a blood-like appearance: Joel 2:31, Acts 2:20, and Revelation 6:12. All three state that both the Moon and the Sun take on a darkened appearance. These passages also imply that the darkening will be visible to all of humanity. However, there is no darkening of the Sun during a total lunar eclipse. Furthermore, total lunar eclipses last only a couple of hours and are visible to a fraction of humanity.

Eight other biblical texts describe the darkening of the Moon’s light, but not the blood color: Ecclesiastes 12:2; Isaiah 13:10; Ezekiel 32:7–8; Joel 2:10; 3:15; Matthew 24:29; Mark 13:24; and Revelation 8:12. In all these passages not only is the Moon’s light darkened but that of the Sun and stars as well. In Revelation 8 the darkening of the Sun, Moon, and stars is preceded by a third of the world’s forests and grasslands being burnt up and a huge mountain set ablaze. Ash from volcanic eruptions and from forest and grass fires both reddens and dims sunlight, moonlight, and starlight.

I personally have seen the reddening and dimming effect of forest fire smoke several times. Not only does the Moon look blood-red but the Sun and stars do as well. I have seen the noontime Sun dimmed to such a degree by forest fire smoke that my environs were as dark as night.

The worldwide injection of dust into the atmosphere offers a consistent and satisfactory explanation for all the Bible passages describing the dimming or reddening (or both) of the Moon’s light. It explains, too, how the entire human population would notice the phenomenon and that many people would begin to fear God as a result. The same cannot be said for Hagee’s lunar eclipse hypothesis.

2. “Great lights” benefit animals but say nothing about prophecy. Another interpretive concern lies in the treatment of Genesis 1:14. Hagee and others (such as Mark Biltz of El Shaddai Ministries and Larry Huch of Larry Huch Ministries) appeal to this verse as justification for looking to the Moon for signs of God’s interventions in human history.Genesis 1:14 (and 1:16) does say that the two great lights (the Sun and the Moon) will serve as signs. However, it says that from creation day four forward they will serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years, not that they will serve as signs to mark prophesied events.

Throughout creation days one, two, and three, light from the Sun and Moon penetrated Earth’s atmosphere, but because of overcast skies at that time, creatures on Earth’s surface could not make out the form of the bodies responsible for the light. On creation day four Earth’s atmosphere first became transparent. Now creatures on Earth’s surface could discern the positions of the Sun, Moon, and stars in the sky. Knowledge of those positions enabled them to determine what part of the year and day they were in and, thus, determine when they should feed, reproduce, migrate, hibernate, and so on. Support for this interpretation stems from the observation that all the life described in Genesis 1 before creation day four does not require knowledge of the positions of the Sun, Moon, and stars to perform their life functions, but all the life described after creation day four in Genesis 1 needs that knowledge to regulate their complex biological clocks.

3. Numerous world events have yet to occur. Finally, Old Testament prophecies regarding the second rebirth of Israel indicate that several events must yet take place before anyone can conclude that the Great Tribulation, the time of the end that precedes Christ’s return, is at hand. A sampling of these events (again, from a premillennial perspective) includes:

While one can argue that these political and economic events could happen in the very near future, so far none have occurred.

Rather than get caught up in the fulfillment of end-times prophecy, I believe Christians should take comfort in Christ’s promise to return and should remain busy promulgating the Gospel. He will return to Earth once his followers have taken the good news of salvation to all the people groups of the world and have raised up many disciples. Instead of waiting for a sign in the sky, we can make his return imminent by completing the task he assigned us. His Holy Spirit promises to help.
