Is Faith in God Merely Wishful Thinking?

Sigmund Freud (1859-1939), the father of psychoanalysis, formally developed the psychological theory that human beings invented God out of desire to find security in the midst of a fearful natural world.1

In his book The Future of an Illusion (1927) Freud developed the theory that human beings face a frightening world full of natural calamities and, ultimately, the terrifying fear of death itself. Therefore just as a child looks to his father for comfort and solace during frightening times so adults do the same thing with regard to God. Out of fear and a desire to be protected human beings project a belief in an imaginary cosmic father figure (God).

Freud viewed religious beliefs as lacking any rational foundation, so the concept of God is merely an illusion arising from human wishful thinking. He identified belief in God as an “infantile neurosis” (a disorder of the mind) because the adult refuses to mature.

Freud thought that the mature person would embrace a more rational perspective on reality and cast off the illusions of religion. However, he was pessimistic about the prospect of most people overcoming their infantile state of mind. In a similar vein, outspoken atheist Richard Dawkins has called religious beliefs a “mental virus” that resulted from a genetic defect in human evolution.

Freud’s Worldview Though Dawkins views religion as the world’s most pernicious force, Freud saw benefits from religion and even admitted that his theory about how belief in God originated cannot be proved. In fact, he apparently believed that the truth or falsity of religious claims could not be rationally verified, though he presumed them to be unreliable and false. He also granted that his theory of religion was not derived from clinical evidence. Scholars have asserted that Freud embraced a strictly naturalistic worldview without a careful evaluation of the rational arguments for grounding faith that religious thinkers offered over the centuries.

Critiquing Freud’s Wishful Thinking Theory
Freud’s projection of a cosmic father theory to explain religion is weak and open to many valid criticisms, including these five:

1.Freud’s theory commits the genetic fallacy. It confuses the supposed ‘origin’ of belief in God with its epistemological warrant (justifying reasons). In other words, the crucial question is not how the belief originated, but rather whether the belief is true or has a rational basis. Additionally, even if belief in God had come about through human fear (a doubtful assumption), plenty of arguments still offer logical justification for a rational belief in God.

2.The God of the Bible is not necessarily the kind of God one would want to project. While God is loving and gracious, he is also perfectly holy, just, and wrathful (Isaiah 6:3; Psalm 89:14; Romans 1:18). A person could certainly find a tamer deity to invent.

3.What people want and desire by nature sometimes does exist. C. S. Lewis’s “argument from desire” reasons thusly: The intrinsic needs of human beings (e.g., hunger, thirst, sexual desire) are fulfilled by extrinsic realities (food, drink, sexual intercourse). Since the vast majority of human beings have an intrinsic need to experience transcendence, there is likely an extrinsic transcendent reality (God) to fulfill this need. Rather than committing the wishful thinking fallacy, Lewis’s argument may be viewed as a type of inference to the best explanation about human nature.

4.Freud’s theory, rather than refuting the objective existence of God, may instead identify a reasonable explanation for how God naturally reveals himself to human beings. The Bible uniquely speaks of God as a loving Father. In fact, Jesus Christ spoke of God as Abba, literally meaning “daddy” (Mark 14:36). It seems natural that people would reason analogically from their earthly father to their heavenly Father. None of the other world religions focus upon God as a loving, caring Father who can be intimately known.

5.Freud’s theory can be turned on its head and used to critique atheism. New York University psychologist Paul Vitz sets forth in his book, Faith of the Fatherless: The Psychology of Atheism, that atheists are more likely candidates for projection than religious believers. He argues that many atheists seem to have rejected God (a projective denial) because they have suffered from either weak, abusive, or absent fathers. Vitz presents biographical evidence that the major atheists from the Enlightenment to modern times (including Hume, Feuerbach, Nietzsche, Freud, Russell, and Sartre) had either weak, abusive, or absent fathers. He also shows that most of the major theists over the same period (including Pascal, Berkeley, Wilberforce, Newman, Chesterton, and Barth) by contrast had loving, nurturing fathers. The argument is that if a child has no father or has a troubled relationship with his father then it is difficult to transfer trust to a heavenly Father (God).

Psychological attempts to explain away belief in God as illusion seem logically weak and lack authentic explanatory power. While Christian theological beliefs involve the human psyche, the truth and reality of the faith itself rests not upon wishful, but on objective thinking. (RTB)

The Metaphysical Expression in Operation

The metaphysical expression of QV[S(1)]qv(m) + QV[S(2)]qv(n)= QV[S(3)](qv(m)+qv(n)) is stating that there were an intelligent design from the beginning of time. God created everything that was created, and nothing was created that He didn’t create in Earth; the heavens is His handywork.

The way God designed man to have needs and desires within His creation gave a convergence to the above metaphysical expression. The metaphysical expression also represents divergences of forms that is not the Will of God from the beginning of time. God’s Will is Jesus(The Spirit of Truth in the world) plus Jesus(The Comforter)= Jesus(God among us), another extension of the Trinity, Father God, Son of God, and God’s Holy Spirit.

The God Equation represents a point of existence or any point of existence.

INTUITIVE KNOWLEDGE AND IMAGE OF GOD

In a study of university biology students, researchers found that people often experience an innate, intuitive resistance to accepting Darwinian evolution as an explanation for life’s existence and diversity. In this four-part series, I will explore the implications of this study and the support it provides to the biblical worldview.

Have you ever had a “gut feeling” that Darwinian evolution is an inadequate explanation of life’s origin and of the many life-forms we observe? If so, you’re not alone. According to a recent study,1 many people share this impression. In fact, this “gut feeling” appears to be the strongest factor prompting people (in general) to reject biological evolution.

This study and the conclusions of the researchers are described in a paper titled “Feeling of Certainty: Uncovering a Missing Link between Knowledge and Acceptance of Evolution,” Because this topic is of great interest, Dr. Fazale Rana explained and responded to the paper on RTB’s Science News Flash podcast (“Evolution Belief a Gut Feeling?”).

The authors of the paper tried to understand why many people resist accepting the theory of evolution.2 They stated that, “many, including biology teachers… do not accept evolutionary theory as an adequate explanation for the diversity and unity of life on Earth”3 and, “numerous studies have revealed that many biology teachers are partial to non-scientific or antievolutionary worldviews, despite significant coursework in both biology and evolution.”4

With this motivation, the researchers surveyed 124 students in biology-teacher preparation programs at two Korean universities. These particular Korean students were chosen because they were essentially “of the same age; completed the same coursework requirements; displayed comparable intellectual abilities as measured by a standardized exam… and completed the same program (no students dropped out).”5 These consistent factors presumably minimized extraneous variables. In addition, the researchers tested the students’ knowledge of evolutionary theory and took into account their religious or nonreligious background.

The Results
After asking the students pertinent questions, the researchers determined that the greatest resistance to evolution (over the student population) was surprisingly due to a “feeling of uncertainty,” an intuitive (gut) feeling that evolution was not true6—despite the biology curriculum promoting Darwinism! Some students from a variety of religious backgrounds and academic levels resisted evolution based on this feeling of uncertainty.
Dr. Rana offered the following observation during the podcast,

Within neuroscience, there is this recognition that . . . there are two components to understanding a phenomenon. One is knowledge and the other is an intuitive feeling of certainty as to whether or not that knowledge is indeed correct.

That is to say, in acquiring knowledge, we not only assimilate information; we also experience an intuitive feeling that the information is true, or in some cases, not true. An article from LiveScience.com underscores the point, “…the human brain doesn’t judge the merits of an idea solely on logic, but also on how intrinsically true the idea feels.”7 In fact, according to the researchers, this intuitive feeling “may have a greater influence on final decisions, dispositions, or actions than conclusions arrived at through principled reasoning.”8

Dr. Rana also pointed out that intuitive knowledge can be valuable in certain situations, such as with firefighters who, in the midst of a blaze, have “gut instincts” that guide them and enable them to survive. He remarked, “People can make sound decisions using their intuition… it’s a valuable component of our ability to understand… to think through circumstances and determine the course of action.”9

On the other hand, the researchers viewed intuitive knowledge as distinctly inferior to reflective or intellectually apprehended knowledge. They implied that reflective knowledge is trustworthy, whereas intuitive knowledge is suspect and unreliable, especially when it resists evolutionary theory!10  The researchers came to believe that strategies should be developed as to how to teach these concepts (regarding intuitive knowledge) to the students, in an effort to help them consciously overcome intuitive resistance.11

Another Paradigm
Nevertheless, I believe that an entirely different paradigm should be considered in regards to the value of these intuitions. Based on Scripture and on the insights of theologians, I submit that these intuitive feelings against Darwinism arise from God’s image in man (Genesis 1:26–27). His image or likeness in man enables us to be receptive to the “testimony” of His existence through creation, which we see in Psalm 19:1–4, Isaiah 40:26, Romans 1:18–20, and in a number of other verses as well.12

To those who are willing to see it, the Creator’s handiwork13 is quite apparent—a concept inadvertently supported by the researchers in their paper, as they referenced a study which held that children “generate intuitive creationist beliefs about origins.”14 Why don’t children generate intuitive evolutionary or at least naturalistic beliefs? I submit that they don’t because they (and all of us) possess the image of God and because they’ve not yet been taught to rationalize away creation’s testimony. (RTB)

Flesh and Spirit: Biblical Metaphysics

The world we have all been born into consists of physical things which can be seen, touched, tasted, tested, and comprehended by the mind of man. That is the physical aspect of reality; it is observable and quantifiable. On the other hand, the Bible reveals to mankind that there is a spiritual component of reality that requires the Spirit of God to observe and fully comprehend. (see Romans 8:7.) Although the physical and spiritual realms seem to be two different things, this is not exactly so. The forces of the spiritual realm directly determine the behavior and function of the things in the physical realm:

“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:”
(Ephesians 2:2 KJV)

The substance known as “air” is a physical thing composed of various gases (mostly Nitrogen and Oxygen). Satan, the Devil, is the prince of the power of the air. He is a spiritual being of very ancient origin who currently has control over the physical things of this present world (under God’s permissive will, of course).

Men and women are a synergy of flesh and spirit. Air is necessary for the life of the flesh, and the life of the flesh is in the blood. The flesh is composed of various physical elements from the Earth and functions through physical electrochemical processes. The spirit of man directs the workings of his flesh (mind over matter). According to the Scriptures, mankind’s flesh is under the influence of the spiritual power of Death.

“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but [how] to perform that which is good I find not.”
(Romans 7:18 KJV)

Both the spirit and the mind of the unsaved are under that malignant control. (I’m not going to mind God, so it does not matter.) If they are saved, their Flesh and Spirit are in constant conflict, and will be until the day they die (unless the Lord returns before they die). This corruption in nature is not limited to people, or just to the Earth. The Bible tells us it permeates the entire physical universe.

“Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight.”
(Job 25:5 KJV)

“Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.”
(Job 15:15 KJV)

If these things be true, the bottom line is that all present physical life forms in the universe are generated by a process driven by Death, because all nature feeds on Death. You kill and eat dead things in order to live and procreate other life forms; then things kill and eat you. Mankind is not at the top of the proverbial Food Chain; worms, viruses and bacteria are. The physical life cycle of this present world is a violent and insatiable downward spiral towards total corruption and entropy. It is not “evolving,” but “devolving” into more and more corruption. To be “one with nature” so to speak is to be one with the spirit of Death, not Holiness. As can be seen from these verses, there is much more to understanding the Biblical meaning of “Death” than is apparent on the surface.

“Dead [things] are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.”
(Job 26:5 KJV)

“Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.”
(Psalms 49:14 KJV)

Death has both a physical and spiritual component. Understanding why this is so is crucial to understanding many things in the Scriptures, especially the Genesis Creation narrative.

Since the entire course of physical nature is affected and influenced by spiritual forces, we must therefore conclude that the correct interpretation of the Genesis account is revealed in the dualistic context of both the physical AND spiritual realms, not just the realm of matter. THAT is the fundamental flaw in the myriad past and present interpretations of the seven days of Genesis, and what has been missing from most previous presentations of the “Gap Theory” of Genesis.

Creationism can not be defended in a purely physical context. It is only when this dualistic precept is understood and accepted that it becomes possible to begin to more perfectly understand and interpret what the Spirit is saying in the Genesis narrative. (see Genesis 1:1-2:1 to review the verses.) In order to fully comprehend exactly what is being stated in the Genesis Creation narrative and why, we must look back in time through the Scriptures to the very beginning; to the time of Genesis 1:1, when the “sons of God” rejoiced over the initial creation of the heaven and the Earth:

“¶ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
(Job 38:4-7 KJV)

Where did Satan and the Angels come from? Who are these “sons of God” spoken of here and in Genesis 6:1-2? They certainly were not men, as they were here before the Earth was created. Who are the “devils” spoken of in the Gospels? The perceptive student will immediately see from the wording of the above verse that these angelic beings were also created creatures, created BEFORE the Lord God began the work of the original creation of the heavens and Earth. How these created beings fit into the overall story is only revealed by the Spirit through the Scriptures. Many of those answers are found in the story of the Pre-Adamite World and the Origin of Satan; the nature of the world which existed at his beginning, his rebellion, and the unleashing of Death across the original Creation in the ancient past as a result of his rebellion against God.

Returning to matters of natural geologic history, the Bible does not give a specific number of years for the age of the planet Earth as it does for the age of this present “world” on the face of the planet (approximately 6,000 years). Neither does it provide much direct knowledge about what transpired on the Earth from the time it was originally created in the ancient past (Gen 1:1) until it is seen again in darkness and ruin (Gen 1:2), prior to the six-day regeneration event by the direct intervention of the Spirit of God (Gen 1:3-2:1). God has chosen to preserve for us the geologic record and His Words to assist us in our search for those answers. The Bible only tells us WHY it became void and without form and provides much insight into the sequence of past events leading up to it. It is only a matter of knowing where to find it in the Bible. Fortunately, much of what happened at the very end of the Pre-Adamite world can be observed in the geology of the Pleistocene. Here are some “observations” on what happened on the face of the Earth at the Death of the Ancient World.

After the ending of days for the old Earth and heaven of the Pre-Adamite world, and as part of the Lord’s preparations for the new regenerated world of Man, a cosmological structure of three (3) heavens was established on the second creative day. It is instructive to note that God does NOT say “it was good” after ending the work of the second day. (See Genesis 1:8.) That omission speaks volumes. The Apostle Paul related his vision and knowledge of the Third Heaven in 2 Cor. 12:2 of his Epistles. A brief study of The Firmament, Third Heaven, and Structure of Things Biblical provides some additional insight into the Creation account and other Biblical doctrines.

To better understand exactly what happened at the end of the ancient world and at the special creation of our present world (this current “generation” of the heavens and the earth [see Genesis 2:4]), we need to look closely at the Life Forms Prior To, and After the Seven Days of Genesis.

Based on the materials covered so far, from what is revealed in the Bible, and what is found in the fossil record, the following thought deserves serious consideration: Could the Pre-Adamite race of hominids that was on this Earth before Adam, and whose physical structure was so similar to modern man, actually have been the physical remains of the fallen “sons of God” who took on flesh and bone to dwell in the world of the old physical creation? The Bible tells us that they did something similar both before and after the days of Noah:

“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men which [were] of old, men of renown.”
(Genesis 6:4 KJV)

If this is true, then it would go a long way in explaining the real truth about the ancient remains of Neanderthal and other ancient hominids, which the Evolutionists claim are the ancestors of modern man. Without the knowledge (or acceptance) of the Biblical Gap Theory, the logical assumption would be that they were direct ancestors. But, as has been shown in the “Life Forms Prior To, and After the Seven Days of Genesis” page (read it again if necessary), there is NO DNA biological connection between those remains and modern living humans. The missing link is still missing. Those creatures, which had a physical likeness similar to man, were not the ancestors of man. They may have been fallen angels or the mutated offspring of angels breeding with biologics. This makes perfect sense, because everywhere in the Bible where angels appear in our present world, they appear as men. Consider the following:

“And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred [and] forty [and] four cubits, [according to] the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.”
(Revelation 21:17 KJV)

“Yea, whiles I [was] speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.”
(Daniel 9:21 KJV)

If the “good” angels appear as men, does it not make sense that the “bad” ones would also? We therefore conclude that when God told Adam and Eve to “replenish” the Earth (Genesis 1:28), that which Adam and Eve (true man – made in God’s image) replaced was the fleshly race of the “sons of God” who inhabited the face of the old world and perished along with everything else by the time of Genesis 1:2, where the Earth is found without form and void.

CONCLUSION: Putting All Things Into Their Proper Biblical and Scientific Perspectives

Taking the literal wording of the King James Bible and the face value of the available “scientific observations” presented, the only possible interpretation which meets BOTH the literal wording of the Scriptures and the scientific data is the Ruin – Reconstruction (Gap Theory) scenario, as fantastic as it may seem.

The fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, is credited with this nugget of deductive reasoning:

“When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth”

Although the originator of the principle was fictional, the principle itself is a very sound one in the search for truth.

We realize, of course, that the material presented here does not meet the acceptable standards of scientific empirical evidence, because in our interpretation of the available scientific evidence we have elevated the Word of God to a position equal to, yea more than equal to, the prevailing body of scientific thought and opinion on matters of origins. As Christians, we place our faith in the authority of the God of the Holy Bible over the wisdom of men in all matters, be it scientific or religious. We also realize that the material presented here does not meet the acceptable standards of many within the “Christian” community, because we have elevated the King James Version and Premillennial eschatology to positions of authority higher than all other English language translations and schools of prophetic interpretation. We make no apology for this, but do hope the reader will objectively and without prejudice consider the worth of the material presented, using that which is found to be of value to enrich his own pursuit of sound doctrine.

There are many fundamental Christians who espouse the Young Earth Creationist position and will be quick to dismiss this work as a compromise to the Evolutionists. That is an emotional and irrational defensive mechanism and part of human nature. All men fear what they don’t understand. Anyone who objectively reads this material and comprehends the argument, will see that this is most certainly not the case. As we have shown throughout this presentation (assuming you are reading the linked pages and looking up the Bible references), acceptance of an old age for the Earth is not an acceptance of Evolution. On the other hand, we make no apology for accepting the validity of sound geologic evidence (not theory), when that evidence is in harmony with what the Bible actually says.

As Christians, as Creationists, and as Bible Believers, we are in agreement with the doctrine that the Lord God “made” the present “world” complete with the heavens and earth, in six, literal 24-hour days, about 6,000 years ago, just as the Bible states in Exodus 20:11 (see also Heb.1:2). But that fundamental doctrine of the faith, in itself, is not the end of all Biblical truth. Neither Exodus 20:11 nor Romans 5:12 contradicts or invalidates the empirical geologic data that reveal that this planet Earth is also very ancient (on the order of hundreds of millions of years) and has a definite fossil history of being and habitation prior to the creative events that begin at Genesis 1:3.

Why such a statement is NOT a contradiction of the doctrine of Romans 5:12 is a difficult concept for many of our Brethren to grasp, because they have wrongly vilified ALL science in their zeal to stand for the defense of the Bible against Evolution. Unfortunately, many do so because of insufficient instruction in the Holy Scriptures and the sciences, which would empower them to make well-reasoned determinations by themselves. The result is seen in the current “Creation Science” movement, where misdirected loyalty to defending traditional Fundamentalist positions has had the exact opposite effect, and has actually led to abandonment of sound doctrine and the embracing of corrupt translations to defend their position on this matter. Once you begin to question the literal wording of the KJV Bible in order to make a doctrinal point, you have already lost the argument.

Instead of wasting time arguing about better translations and holding up geological anomalies as proof against scientific realities of fact, spend more time learning about some very important Christian doctrines and Spiritual truths which are vanishing from the pulpits of today because of the sin of unbelief.

Study and understand the full truth about the “Sea” that God placed above the physical universe (Gen 1:6-10, Rev 4:6, Rev 21:1), what it is, and why it is presently there. (Review the “The Firmament, Third Heaven, and Structure of Things Biblical” link’s material.) Understanding of the Spiritual importance of such things is interrelated with a comprehensive knowledge of other equally important Scriptural doctrines and precepts.

Study and learn about the dispensations (different times) as revealed in the Holy Bible. Get a firm understanding of the Chronology of the “Worlds” past, present, and future as revealed by your Bible. Learn the extremely important Doctrinal Differences between the terms “Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 11:12) and “Kingdom of God” (Luke 17:21) as presented in the Scriptures. From the very beginning of time until the end of time, control of the “Kingdom” is the central theme of struggle behind the whole Biblical story. If you don’t get this down solid, you won’t be able to get the full truth out of Genesis.

Learn all the truth about the 1,000-year literal reign of the Lord Jesus Christ and the regenerated heavens and Earth (a new “world”) when He returns (Matt 19:28, Isaiah 65:17-25, Revelation 20). Understand the continued existence of Death for surviving mankind (not resurrected saved Saints) who get the victory over the Beast, live through the Great Tribulation, and obtain entrance into that regenerated world (Isaiah 65:20) called the “Kingdom of Heaven.” Learn why the Kingdom is here on the Earth during that period of time yet to come, a period which correlates in prophetic type to the Seventh Day of Genesis (see 2 Peter 3:8). Once you grasp these truths, you will more perfectly understand the full import of the final abolishment of Death after the 1,000-year Kingdom of Heaven on the Earth (Rev 20:14) and the change of structure and dimensions of the new heaven and earth which will be created after the final judgment (Rev 21:1). Then the disappearance of the “Sea” in Revelation 21:1, which is between the second and third heavens, and which was first established at the beginning of the days of true man (see Genesis 1:6-10) will make sense, and the you will better understand the reasons for the gap between Genesis verses 1 and 2. Confused? That is why you need to study and rightly divide the words of truth.

Within the pages of the King James Authorized Version of the Holy Scriptures you will find the EXACT English language wording that, today, can still faithfully and effectively reveal the truth and full import of these matters. Only when the scriptures are taken as a whole, and interpreted as such, can the full truth be found. You also MUST be a born-again child of God to understand and accept some of these doctrines, because they are spiritually discerned (see 1 Cor. 2:14 and 1 John 2:20). Even for many saved people, some of this material is difficult at first; but as you learn these doctrines, more and more of your Bible will begin to open to you.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
(Proverbs 3:5 KJV)

“For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
(Isaiah 55:8-9 KJV)

All learning takes place on the periphery of what we have previously learned. The more you study the Scriptures, the more you learn; and as you learn and accept, more will be revealed to you:

“Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? [them that are] weaned from the milk, [and] drawn from the breasts. For precept [must be] upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, [and] there a little:”
(Isaiah 28:9-10 KJV)

Claim these spiritual promises by faith, in full assurance that your King James Bible is still a sure Authority. Don’t let some over-educated scholar or preacher convince you that the KJV Bible is inaccurate or out of date. That Bible is an inexhaustible source of true knowledge and wisdom. A firm grounding in some of the basics of science and logic will complement a prayerful study of the Scriptures and enhance your understanding, and God’s Spirit will witness to those things which are true and show which things are not. God is the author and creator of all things, both physical and spiritual. His Scriptures are the Final Authority in all matters, including the science of natural history. What we learn from the geological evidence beneath our feet provides important details to the whole story. That is why it is there; the rocks and fossils, as well as the other things in this world, testify of His workings, glory, and judgment across time and space (see Psalm 19).

The Creationism vs. Evolution Debate

Let us clearly state up front that the ongoing controversy of “Creation vs. Evolution” will never be resolved to the satisfaction of the secular scientific community. It cannot be resolved in a secular context regardless of the well-intended efforts of many on either side of the debate, or in between, because the current focus of the argument is emotionally and factually misdirected.

Armed with only the observations of current and historical geologic processes and other empirical data, and assuming natural history has been a continuum across billions of years, the present secular paradigms of geological and evolutionary theory are about the best belief system that the educated carnal mind of man could be expected to conceive and accept from the available physical evidence. Without the input of Biblical Authority, current theories are incomplete and many questions and mysteries remain unresolved, especially in relation to the origins of mankind.

Secular scientists are confident to point out scientific inaccuracies of the Bible because they have been led to view the Bible through the distorted lenses of traditional Biblical interpretation. What these scientists have successfully contradicted is traditionally-held Biblical interpretation; specifically, that all things were created out of nothing only about six thousand years ago, as espoused by Young Earth Creationists. However, when you get down to the solid core of what the Bible actually and truly says, Scripture compared to Scripture, there is no scientific evidence in existence today to refute what it actually says: All life, indeed an entire ancient world order, had already perished from the face of the Earth long before the seven days of Genesis. The rightly-divided Scriptures reveal that the seven days of Genesis are a REGENERATION of the heavens and earth, and that life on this planet has not been an actual continuum. Both the Bible and scientific data are most certainly in agreement on one very key point: This planet Earth is very, very old, and if God authored both the Word and Earth’s geologic record, no real contradiction in fact can possibly exist. The fault MUST be interpretive on both sides.

Noah’s flood and Divine creative intervention by a Holy God are not factored into the world’s accepted origins model, because God can’t be observed or quantified in a physical system or seen under a microscope, although the results of His work can be observed and quantified. For these reasons there is an unbridgeable gap between secular Empirical Science and the Christian faith in respect to both Creation and Noah’s flood. Empirical Science is the pursuit of quantifiable facts and repeatable observations and is limited to the physical sphere of reality. From this purely physical perspective, the geological evidence appears to indicate that this planet and the life on it are the result of natural processes over time, and that the existence of all life forms and extinction must be credited to a natural process of random mutations and selection by nature itself. In such a paradigm of interpretation, the researcher’s faith is in a theory or synthesis of theories which seems to best fit the observations.

The Christian, on the other hand, must also deal with spiritual things, which are just as real as physical things, but can only be seen through the agency of faith by the illumination of the Word of God. An honest born-again Christian (who is also a scientist) cannot be fully objective in an empirical perspective in dealing with the question of origins. The acceptance of God’s Words on matters of original sin and supernatural agency hold us accountable to a higher interpretive system, a system which has no place of welcome in the institutional physical sciences of the world. No amount of compromise will be acceptable to either the Naturalist or Creationist extremes of each respective school. That being said, please do not misunderstand. A lot of good knowledge emerges from the practice of good science and the scientific method, and there are a lot of good Christians who are scientists. But when it comes to matters of origins and the things of God, natural science (without God) is as much out of its depth in providing the full truth as the Young Earth Creationist who ignores solid scientific data.

“Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind.” – Albert Einstein.

Behind the scenes, however, the real driving issue between Naturalists and Creationists is not the existence of God. The real issue is whether all things were created by the Hebrew God of the Holy Bible and according to a designed purpose and specific time scale. The authority of the Bible and the moral issue of personal accountability to God are the hidden root of all contention in that debate.

Leaving behind the vanity and politics of the Creation/Evolution debate, those who have a well-grounded faith in the Scriptures and a good knowledge of the geological evidence (not theories) are in the better position to attain to a more perfect understanding of how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. It is only when we accept God and His Words as the final authority in ALL matters that we are able to perceive the complete picture and resolve the “6,000 years problem” at the heart of the controversy. It is our goal through these web pages to provide you some of those answers.

The Bible will ALWAYS have an answer, although we may not immediately see it. For example, it was not until a few centuries ago that the Geological sciences had progressed to the point where the previously-accepted 6,000 year age of the Earth, which was dogma in both the institutions of Church and science, began to be questioned by what was observed in the geological record. Some theologians of the day who were honest enough to realize the truth of those emerging observations and were steadfast, faithful, and committed to defending the Scriptures, were inspired to observe the possibility of a time “Gap” between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 in the Creation narrative. That “Gap” had always been there – ever since the day Moses penned the book – but not many eyes were open to seeing or understanding it until the times were right. It was already there when the Scottish theologian, Thomas Chalmers, first noticed and began to preach it in the early 19th century. Up until then, the real age of the Earth was not a burning issue. But when the proper time came, the Word of God once again proved itself timely and relevant to the level of scientific understanding of the day.

This is “Progressive Revelation” and it continues even in our present age. Here is another example of Progressive Revelation in the book of Revelation:

“And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.”
(Revelation 11:9 KJV)

The question is how could people all over the world, in different nations and places, all “see” these dead bodies on a street in Jerusalem at the same time? Certainly from the time John wrote it in about 90 AD, up to about the middle of the 20th century, nobody could understand how that would be possible. But today, with global satellite Television and Internet Web Cams, anyone today can understand how it is possible. The point is this: It was a truth that was not revealed to mankind until it was TIME, even though that literal truth had always been there. The same holds true for the Genesis narrative. When it was time for man to learn about geology and Earth’s natural history, and the full truth about origins, the qualifying verses and explanations were already there in the Genesis narratives and elsewhere in the Bible. It was TIME for those truths to unseal. It is now time for the Fundamental Christian Church to accept this paradigm shift.

This line of thinking is completely lost, of course, on the Young Earth “Creation Scientists” of today who preach that the original creation of ALL things occurred only 6,000 years ago. They also use Noah’s flood as the catchall solution to explaining the Earth’s sedimentary rocks. They claim that all the Earth’s hydrocarbons (coal and oil) were made by Noah’s flood. Some claim that most of the Earth’s mountains were uplifted during Noah’s flood. Some even claim that the Ice Age was precipitated by Noah’s flood. Because their theology demands that all of the Earth’s natural history be jammed into a narrow 6,000-year period, they are required to have the dinosaurs roaming the earth before the flood, side by side with mankind, and a few even have dinosaurs listed as part of the animals on Noah’s Ark. The “Science” (see 1 Timothy 6:20) for support of this belief system is based mainly on appeals to anomalies, “what if” arguments, “water canopies” which defy the laws of physics, and a peculiar collection of urban legends. It is neither good science nor good Biblical interpretation.

I don’t dispute that Noah’s flood was real, because the Bible tells us that Noah’s flood was real; shortly we will propose a flood model that addresses the real-world Scriptural and scientific requirements. The major point which must first be clearly understood is that both the Earth’s geology and the Scriptures tell us that Noah’s flood could NOT have been responsible for the earth’s extensive sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous petrology. Freshman level knowledge of the Law of Superposition and field observations of Angular Unconformities in folded mountain sediments say otherwise. But more importantly, the Bible itself witnesses against these false claims. This is discussed more in depth in our section on Fossils and Sedimentary Rock.

The notions of alleged major tectonic and/or volcanic activity at work during Noah’s flood are conclusively shown to be false by the low levels of SO4 ions (acid) in the ice layers of the Greenland Ice Sheet, which can be correlated to the time of the flood. That same Ice Sheet contains a wealth of Paleoclimate data which show that all of earth’s geologic history cannot be compacted into a 6,000-year time frame, especially when its layer history can be dated and traced back over a period in excess of 100,000 years and cross verified with assorted proxy dating methods. The bottom line is this: We should not lightly dismiss the claims of Young Earth Creationists – we should violently discard them. Noah’s flood is not a credible scapegoat to evade the tough technical and Scriptural issues.

The full truth about Creation and Noah’s flood for a faithful Bible Believer must fit all the observations and verses, not just some of them. The full truth is only revealed by a prayerful examination of the EXACT wording of the Scriptures, through the Spirit of Truth, and faith in those words combined with some common sense and reasoning (Isaiah 1:18). It also takes courage and trust in the Lord’s Words and His wisdom, not yours, to see how it all fits together, and standing against the majority position in such matters when necessary. You cannot disregard the full truth revealed by Genesis 1:2 and remain in denial, hiding your head in the sands of traditional interpretation.

Remember, in order to effectively witness to the lost, we must be able to demonstrate to the unsaved scientist or intellectual that one does not have to give up his/her brain to believe in Jesus and the Bible; to tell them that God published so that they would not perish. (Let the reader understand the play on the metaphor.) If you can deal with the facts on their turf and show them you know what you are talking about, then you have a better chance to convince them of their need for Jesus. An honest interpretation of the Scriptures and unprejudiced consideration of the geologic data will enable the Bible Believer to effectively witness.

Before getting down to the Scriptural and Scientific support for the “Gap Theory” and a focus on the key truths revealed in verse Genesis 1:2, we need to falsify some of the “Creation Science” of the “Young Earth” Creationists by clearly showing what Noah’s flood was (and was NOT) responsible for in respect to the Earth’s geologic record. Scientific Evidence Proves That the Bible Is The Inspired Word Of God

By “Reason To Believe” writing team

The Bible:

God’s inspired message to man.

Scientific evidences to prove it!!!

The Bible is the world’s all-time best selling book. About 2.5 billion copies have been printed which are available in over 700 languages. Although the Bible has enjoyed such vast distribution and attention, it is read relatively little. Perhaps part of the reason the Bible is so neglected is the many doubts people have about this unique book. If the Bible came from the mouth of God, then the scriptures are believable when they speak of Jesus Christ and accurate when they touch the realm of science.

All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work . (2 Timothy 3:16,17)

The word “inspired” (theopneustos) in the original Greek language literally means “God-breathed”. When the Bible claims to be inspired, we understand therefore, that it came from the mouth of God. It is God-breathed, inspired.

But a skeptic will say, “Everyone knows the Bible was written by men! The book of 1 Corinthians, for example, was written by a man named Paul. After all, the very first verse bears his name as the author.” In reply to this we answer: “Yes, 1 Corinthians was written by Paul. Notice however, what Paul said in chapter 14, verse 37: “the things I write to you are the Lord’s commandment.” Paul knew the source of his writings and understood that he was like a pen in the hand of Almighty God. We must not view the Bible as the word of Paul, Peter, or Jeremiah, but rather, as the message God revealed through these men just as it is written in Jeremiah 1:9,

Then the Lord stretched out his hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me, ‘behold, I have put my words in your mouth’.

The Bible writers were not like news reporters giving their personal interpretation of events they eye-witnessed, but were divinely guided as 2 Peter 1:20-21 says,

Above all, you must understand that no prophesy of scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

God and man worked together in writing the scriptures. However, in this work, God is the author who dictated the message, and man is the writing instrument. Men were guided or inspired to write the exact message God wanted recorded in the Bible. Now that we have a fundamental understanding of inspiration and the origin of the Bible, let us look at some evidence of inspiration.

“We constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God’s message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God” (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

Scientific information in the Bible

Although the Bible is not primarily a book of science, it does contain numerous scientific facts. We laugh at the scientific knowledge of just a hundred years ago. If man alone were the author of the Bible, we would expect to find many such humorous errors contained in it. However, if we examine the scientific data of the Bible and find it to be accurate to present-day knowledge, then we have powerful evidence for divine authorship. The scientific facts we are about to examine are not only accurate, but were revealed thousands of years before man discovered them for himself. The Bible does not contain any errors typical of the time in which it was written. Would we expect anything less from a book written by God?

The earth is round!

You may be surprised to learn that the Bible revealed that the earth is round. Job 26:10, Prov 8:27, Isaiah 40:22, Amos 9:6. Today, we chuckle at the people of the fifteenth century who feared sailing because they thought they would fall over the edge of the flat earth. Yet the Bible revealed the truth in 1000 B.C. 2500 years before man discovered it for himself!

“Paths of the sea”

Click to View Matthew Maury (1806-1873) is considered the father of oceanography. His daughter was reading a portion of the Bible to him. While listening, he noticed the expression “paths of the sea” in Psalms 8:8. Upon his recovery, Maury took God at his word and went look ing for these paths. We are indebted to his discovery of the warm and cold continental currents. His book on oceanography is still considered a basic text on the subject and is still used in universities. Maury used the Bible as a guide to scientific discovery. If only more would use the Bible as a guide in their personal lives!

“At one time, when Commodore Maury was very sick, he asked one of his daughters to get the Bible and read to him. She chose Psalm 8, the eighth verse of which speaks of “whatsoever walketh through the paths of the sea,” he repeated “the paths of the sea, the paths of the sea, if God says the paths of the sea, they are there, and if I ever get out of this bed I will find them.” source

The Hydrologic Water Cycle

Revealed in the Bible: Job 36:27-28

The water cycle was not fully understood until about 30 B.C. by a Roman engineer named Marcus Vitruvius. Yet every aspect of the water cycle was fully revealed to mankind in 1600 B.C.! The Bible’s description is in perfect harmony with modern science. Eccl 1:6-7; 11:3; Job 26:8; Amos 9:6. Vitruvius was 1600 years too late!

6 DAY CREATION…

GOD WAS TAKING HIS TIME

If a fair maiden kisses a frog which instantly changes into a handsome prince, we would call it a fairy tale. But if the change takes 40 million years, we call it evolution. We often hear that science has proved evolution. Nothing could be further from the truth. You see, people often confuse scientific fact with scientific theory. Current scientific theory does conflict with creation. But the facts of science do not! There are many scientists who fully accept Biblical creation. Surprised?

The theory of evolution says that over millions of years simple life forms (one celled creatures) slowly evolved into complex life forms (fish), and that one kind of animal evolved into another kind (ape to man). Genesis, on the other hand, says that all life forms were created in six, 24 hour days. Genesis chapter one states 10 times that life forms can only reproduce after their own kind (ape to ape, man to man). All the observable facts of science strongly support the Bible’s claim that it is impossible for one kind to reproduce a different kind. The truth is, there is absolutely no tangible evidence to support evolution from any area of science, just theory and a wild imagination!

But if the Bible is wrong and man actually did evolve in small graduations over a long period of time, we should find ample fossil evidence of links in intermediate stages of transition. For decades, evolutionists have searched for fossils of these links to prove biblical creation wrong. Although millions of fossils have been unearthed, not even one missing link has ever been found. Has it ever occurred to you that this is the reason why scientists refer to them as missing links?

Even Charles Darwin realized the difficulty missing links gave his theory. Darwin wrote in his book, Origin Of The Species, “Why, if species have descended from other species by fine graduation, do we not everywhere see innumerable transitional forms? Why is not all nature in confusion, instead of the species being, as we see them, well defined?” The reason we have never found any missing links is quite simple. Darwin’s theory of evolution is wrong!

Experts tricked for 40 years!

In 1912, Arthur Woodward announced to the world that he had found the missing link between ape and man. Piltdown Man, as he called it, consisted of a jaw bone and a piece of skull which he estimated to be over 500,000 years old! However, in 1953, when the new fluoride dating process was applied to the bones, scientists were shocked to learn that the jaw bone was less than 50 years old. Only then did they notice that the bones and teeth had been treated with salts and filed to make them appear old and primitive. In other words, Piltdown Man was a complete fraud. Take note Bible student! The world’s foremost scientific experts had been fooled for over 40 years! (Read 1 Corinthians 3:18-20.) For almost a half century, evolutionists pushed Piltdown Man in the faces of Bible believers as scientific proof we evolved from apes! Some proof!

In spite of over 100 years of intensive searching, the only place you will find a missing link today is in the colourful imagination of an evolutionist. Museums certainly don’t have any! “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen 1:1) Have you ever considered that when God created the universe in six short 24 hour days, He may have been taking His time?

The Bible is a reliable book of genuine divine prophecy. You can trust it!

The evidence presented here is just a tiny portion of the proofs available to establish the divine origin of the Bible. Yet, they are more than sufficient to prove the inspiration of the Bible. There will always be men who scoff at the Bible. You, however, can be confident when you read your Bible that God is the author, for it is written:

“We constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God’s message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God” (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

Signs of the End Times Are Gathering

The stage is being prepared for a new world system. Knowledge is increasing at an exponential rate. The bible speaks of the time when knowledge shall increase rapidly than the end time is near. As we approach these times, only two stages shall prevail, the Jesus stage or the AntiChrist stage.

The AntiChrist stage has been making much progress during the pass 40 years in American and abroad. The secular humanist movement that started in the 1930’s has become strong enough to move against religion in a very bold manner. The stopping of prayer in public schools, and dismissing any reference to religion in a governmental institution has been bold steps toward acheiving their goal of a Godless nation. Private enterprises has been following suit. No bibles allowed on any public school campus; no bibles allowed at the workplace.

The establishment clause associated with our Constitution has been highly respected for over 100 years until the pass few years when the government began to threaten churches with the change of their nonprofit tax status, and demand payments for taxes if they mentioned anything political to their congregation. To disrespect separation of church and government by rejecting the church would have been unthinkable 40 years ago.

The frightening thing is that our youth has been brainwashed to think that church is only for teaching the bible and it has no social commitment to the community when in actuality the church as been the main median for solving problems in the community since the creation of the church as an institution. The bible speaks of the blatant rejection of Christianity during the end times. Another frightening fact is that the bible speaks of armageddon being triggered by the rumor of wars among the small nations of the world. North Korea immediately comes into mind alone with Iraq, Iran, and others. This is a sure indicator of the ends times…North Korea and other small nations getting missiles and nuclear warheads are a prime sign of the ends times.

Dumbing down the kids by not policing drugs effectively, and allowing most kids to reduce intellectually to what is in front of their noses, and out of a drug induced stupor ignorantly begin to blaspheme God. The bible also speaks of this being a fact as we approach the end times.

After every large war it has always been proclaimed that it was the war to end all wars. But, there was always another large war. All powers available to leaders has been used even if they previously had promised not to use such powers. With the proliferation of nuclear warheads it’s not the question of is there going to be a nuclear war; it’s when.

The Christian faith says that all shall not be lost. The seconding coming of Christ shall save the elect. The faithful Christians shall then walk away with everything; just read the last pages of the bible.

Deception and death shall be the two last enemies of man.

Daniel 12:1
[ The End Times ] “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.

Matthew 24:1
[ The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times ] Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.

Mark 13:1
[ The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times ] As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”

Luke 21:5
[ The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times ] Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God.

Luke 21:6
Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.”

Can Science Be Reconciled With The Word Of God?

In Christian belief, God reveals himself in both the written book of the Bible and the created “book” of the natural world. Thus, the truths we find in scripture should not conflict with the truths we find in nature. Yet at times the two revelations seem to be saying contradictory things about how God made the world. Since God does not lie, the conflict must occur at the level of human interpretation: either a misunderstanding of what God is revealing in nature, or a misunderstanding of what God is revealing in scripture. Conflicts motivate us to reevaluate both interpretations. Christians may disagree on whether the scientific or the Biblical interpretation needs to change, but we can agree that God speaks to us in both revelations.

In Detail: Two revelations

Psalm 19 begins with the well-loved words “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Scientists often turn to this Psalm to express their praise to the Creator when they make discoveries in the lab – the biochemistry of a cell also declares the glory of God!

In the second half of the Psalm, David turns his thoughts from the God’s world to God’s word, writing “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.” David praises God for both revelations – for what God has revealed in both nature and scripture. In later centuries, theologians introduced the metaphor of two “books” where nature is seen as a book, parallel to the book of Scripture. The Belgic Confession of 1561 states in Article 2 that
We know God by two means:

First, by the creation, preservation, and government of the universe,
since that universe is before our eyes like a beautiful boo in which all creatures, great and small, are as letters to make us ponder the invisible things of God:

God’s eternal power and divinity, as the apostle Paul says in Romans 1:20:
” All these things are enough to convict humans and to leave them without excuse.”

Second, God makes himself known to us more clearly by his holy and divine Word, as much as we need in this life, for God’s glory and for our salvation.

Since both are revelations from God, they both carry God’s full authority and cannot be ignored. The primary purpose of any revelation is to teach us about God, but both of these also have something to say about how and why God created the world. Sometimes the revelations appear to be in conflict, but since God speaks only truth, the two revelations cannot be teaching us contradictory things.

So what is the source of all the friction?

The conflict must occur at the level of human interpretation: either a misunderstanding of what God is revealing in nature, or a misunderstanding of what God is revealing in scripture. In debates over Genesis and evolution, Christians often disagree about which interpretation is in error. We can agree, however, that scripture and nature are complementary and faithful witnesses to their common Author.

For more on the relationship between nature and scripture, see “What is the proper relationship between science and religion?”

Science: Interpreting God’s revelation in Nature

Building scientific theories resembles map making. A map gathers different kinds of data like longitude and latitude, elevations, waterways, and climate to make a coherent representation of reality. The map is not reality itself but a model of reality. Scientific maps of reality are known as “theories.” Some theories are new and tentative (like string theory), while others are long-standing and well-supported by abundant observations and experiments (like photosynthesis).

The process of science is to develop and test these theories: scientists follow the map, see if it matches the real world, then modify the map to match reality better.

How reliable are scientific results? Science is a human activity, so of course it can be in error at times. Self-promoting individuals can push for outcomes that advance their reputation. A desire for particular results or an assumption about the ways things are can result in manipulation of data, whether consciously or unconsciously. Unfortunately, there have been plenty of examples of such contrived data in the history of science. One chronicle of how such distortions were perpetuated can be found in Steven Jay Gould’s The Mismeasure of Man, which retells the tragic story of how 19th century science found alleged data to support prevailing prejudices about the relationship between race and intelligence.

However, science is self-correcting. All scientific publications are peer-reviewed, where experts check for errors in methods, over-stated claims, and other problems. Published measurements are tested by other groups of scientists to see if they get the same results. Published theories are vigorously debated and compared to alternate explanations. Sometimes even selfish motivations can help the self-correcting process, since scientists can advance their careers by publishing errors and proposing new theories. Inaccuracies in theories are corrected when new discoveries and experiments reveal a problem. When theories are new and based on preliminary data, biases such as those described above can have a large influence on results. But after theories are tested and refined by many scientists all over the world, they give a reliable interpretation of physical reality.

Interpreting God’s Revelation in Scripture

For Christians, the Bible is not just a book of moral lessons or factual statements. Rather, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that all God’s people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Scripture connects God’s action in real historical events with his purpose behind those actions. Scripture also draws us into the story, so that we are not mere readers, but citizens of God’s kingdom and part of God’s redemptive history. The Bible is the result of human-divine partnerships in which God inspired and commanded the human authors to communicate his word to his people.

Christians often disagree on the precise meaning of particular passages. Some scriptural teachings, like the accounts of Jesus’ death and resurrection, have clear meaning which has been affirmed by the church throughout the centuries and around the world. Other teachings, like baptism of adults vs. infants, are ambiguous and their interpretation has been debated for centuries. Some teachings, like ownership of slaves, were viewed one way for centuries, then were reinterpreted as the gospel moved into new cultures. Church tradition can be a valuable guide to good interpretation, but at times should be challenged.

How can we find the best interpretation of scripture?

One good strategy is to always start by studying and pondering what the passage meant to the inspired human author and the original audience. The style of language, the genre of literature, and the historical and cultural context are all helpful in understanding the original meaning. Once we better understand God’s revelation to the first audience, we can consider what God might have to teach us today in the 21st century. Without this strategy, we risk imposing our own modern culture and personal preferences on the text. This does not mean you have to be a scholar to understand the Bible. Even in confusing passages (like Genesis 1-2), the primary teaching of scripture is usually clear even to a child (God created the world and declared it good). The careful background work becomes important for scholars and teachers who want to explore the subtle meanings and implications of the text (such as how it fits with science).

See “What factors should be considered in determining how to approach a passage of scripture?”

An Historical Example

The story of Galileo is a well-known historic example of conflict between science and Biblical interpretation. In Galileo’s time there was a heated disagreement over the solar system, specifically whether the Sun or the Earth was at the center. This led to a debate over the meaning of Bible verses like Psalm 93:1 which state “The earth is fixed and cannot be moved.” If this verse is read scientifically, it would mean that the Earth was stationary and did not orbit the Sun. However, Galileo made astronomical observations that showed the planets did move about the Sun. Today we understand Psalm 93:1 to mean that the earth is established and secure, just as God’s throne is established. Galileo, who remained a loyal Catholic to the end of his life, makes his position clear in a letter to the Grand Duchess Christina:

“[In] St. Augustine we read: ‘If anyone shall set the authority of Holy Writ against clear and manifest reason, he who does this knows not what he has undertaken; for he opposes to the truth not the meaning of the Bible, which is beyond his comprehension, but rather his own interpretation, not what is in the Bible, but what he has found in himself and imagines to be there.’ ”

“This granted, and it being true that two truths cannot contradict one another, it is the function of expositors to seek out the true senses of scriptural texts. These will unquestionably accord with the physical conclusions which manifest sense and necessary demonstrations have previously made certain to us.”

Galileo did not see his discoveries as contrary to the Bible, but contrary to certain human interpretations of the Bible. And rather than dictating what the correct interpretation should be, Galileo recommended that Biblical scholars work to better understand the “true sense of scriptural texts.”

Interaction between science and biblical interpretation

What do we do when the results of science disagree with common biblical interpretations?

One response is to say that the Bible is right and science is wrong; the Bible, after all, is more important to the Christian. This response, however, forgets that the Bible is always interpreted, and elevates a particular biblical interpretation to the authority of the Bible itself. It also discounts God’s revelation to us in the natural world, rather than listening to what science has learned about it.

Another response is to say that science is right and the Bible is wrong. This response, however, says that the Bible itself is in error, rather than that a particular interpretation is incorrect. It also elevates scientific knowledge as the best type of knowledge, even though science is ill-equipped to answer questions about ancient texts.

A better response is to reconsider the interpretations on both sides. When we hear a scientific result that seems to conflict with the Bible, we should look at it more closely. How strong is the evidence? Is there a consensus among scientists? Has the theory been tested extensively? What alternate theories are available? At the same time we take a closer look at Biblical interpretation. What did the passage mean to the original audience? What interpretations have been held throughout church history? What are the theological implications? Rather than rejecting one side or the other, we can study both more carefully, remembering that God is speaking to us in both scripture and nature. In this approach, science does not determine which interpretation of scripture is best. Instead, science motivates us to take a closer look at scripture, using good biblical scholarship to determine the best interpretation.

Occasionally, multiple interpretations of scripture seem equally appropriate when considered with the tools of biblical scholarship. In those cases, science can break the tie. By showing us what God reveals in nature, science can show that some interpretations are inappropriate. As Professor Donald Mackay writes:

Obviously a surface meaning of many passages could be tested, for example, against archaeological discoveries, and the meaning of others can be enriched by scientific and historical knowledge. But I want to suggest that the primary function of scientific enquiry in such fields is neither to verify nor to add to the inspired picture, but to help us in eliminating improper ways of reading it. To pursue the metaphor, I think the scientific data God gives us can sometimes serve as his way of warning us when we are standing too close to the picture, at the wrong angle, or with the wrong expectations, to be able to see the inspired pattern he means it to convey to us. (biologo)

Hebrews 11:3
By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Romans 1:20
New King James Version (NKJV)
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

Isaiah 28:16
Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Romans 9:33
As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

NOTE: The term “Zion” means “the essence of a thing” in old Hebrewian text; esoteric knowledge.

Our Toyspace Is Moaning and Groaning To Expand Into God’s Kingdom

I call the knowledge and state of our society relative to the Kingdom of God Toyspace. As for relating everything to God liken unto the scripture “Do everything unto the Lord…” Toyspace has been sanctified unto God only. In our present Toyspace we have the Word of God as written in the bible; this text is always sanctified.

Why Toyspace when we already have the terms natural and supernatural? Well, because the new age movement has claimed most meanings, and have brainwashed the minds of people; especially, the youth whom now believe that Christianity or religion in general is obsolete and foolish. So, I could say that Toyspace is an intermediate state as we transform into the Kingdom of God. One doesn’t have to die in order to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus says that “the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand…” The main enemy who resist the transformation unto the Kingdom of God is self and many selves collectively.

The natural world is founded by God’s principles or, in a scientific sense, the physics thereof. The physical world conditions us, and makes suggestions to us…forms us. Our minds with our human design seeks convenience and the best economic paradigm; less efforts and more gratification. Man was created to live in Heaven, plain and simple. The immutable principles of the physical world and our physical human design imposes on each other dynamically and we learn laws.

Our conditioning by the physical world creates inductively a spiritual paradigm that we call a personal relationship with God, our Creator. We now have the struggle to have faith in our spiritual beliefs as we do our physical beliefs or beyond belief unto facts. As we believe the fact of gravity we should believe our spiritual law as a fact just the same. This is where faith comes into play. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

As we know to be a fact jumping off a mountain activates the principle of gravity. Well, holding to “Seek God’s Kingdom and His Righteousness, and God shall add All unto you” activates a fact from God. Strong faith avails much; but faith without doubt does supernatural works and can change time.

All the dynamics of creation is screaming and moaning “See The Living Word of God, Jesus.” because He is Who our Creator is talking about. Release, and behold the complete and wholeness of God’s Spirit. It takes a life to put all the suggestions and conditions together into one whole Spirit of life given to each one of us by God.

Romans 1:20
New King James Version (NKJV)
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

Hebrews 11:3
By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

The Bible Is a Textbook of Science

“If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things?” (John 3:12).

The Christian polemicist frequently is confronted with the problem of the scientific “errors” in Scripture, especially in its first eleven chapters. Often he is tempted to resort to the solution of neo-orthodoxy and to protest that “the Bible is, after all, not a textbook of science, but rather of religion.” “It is meant to tell us the fact of creation, not the method of creation; it tells us who is Creator, not when or how He created. It points us to a confrontation with the Creator, not an understanding of earth history.”

It is obvious, of course, that the Bible is not a scientific textbook in the sense of giving detailed technical descriptions and mathematical formulations of natural phenomena. But this is not adequate reason for questioning the objective accuracy of those numerous portions of Scripture which do deal with natural phenomena and historical events.

This type of apologetic device is both logically unsatisfactory and evangelistically unfruitful. How can an inquirer be led to saving faith in the divine Word if the context in which that Word is found is filled with error? How can he trust the Bible to speak truly when it tells of salvation and heaven and eternity which he is completely unable to verify empirically he finds that data which are subject to test are fallacious? Surely if God is really omnipotent and omniscient, He is as well able to speak with full truth and perspicuity when He speaks of earthly things as when He speaks of heavenly things.

IMPORTANCE OF BASIC PRESUPPOSITIONS

It is salutary for anyone dealing with questions of this sort to recognize the essential nature of faith and presuppositions in his reasonings. “Science” (the very meaning of which is knowledge) necessarily can deal only with those things which exist at present. The scientific method involves reproducibility, the study of present natural processes. When men attempt to interpret the events of the prehistoric past or the eschatological future, they must necessarily leave the domain of true science (whose measurements can be made only in the present) and enter the realm of faith.

This faith may be in the doctrine of uniformity, which assumes that the present processes may be extrapolated indefinitely into the past or future and that therefore “all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” (II Peter 3:4). If one, because of his basic presupposition, wishes to believe in uniformity in this way, it is logically possible for him to do so and to explain all the pertinent data in this context. He can determine the ages of rocks and suns by projecting present rates of change into the limitless past; he can develop theories about the evolution of species and life and galaxies and chemical elements and everything in the universe, if he wishes, and no one can prove him wrong, for the simple reason that these events are not reproducible and therefore not subject to scientific checking. The most that can be done is to argue that his theories are either probable or improbable on the premise of his own uniformitarian presupposition, depending upon the logical consistency of the superstructure he has erected upon this foundation. But this is all within the context of his pure assumption faith uniformity.
One can equally logically start with some other assumption and then develop his explanations of the data within that framework. For example, one may assume, if he wishes, that all things in the universe were created by divine fiat five minutes ago. He could say that our apparent memories of earlier events were also created five minutes ago, and once again, no one could prove him wrong. He had logically explained all the data that exist, given his initial premise. As a matter of fact, one could assume, if he wishes, that all existence is illusory, a disease of mortal mind.

The important point, here, is that one may pretty well believe what he wants to believe. He can erect a logical system within which he can explain all the physical data upon any one of any number of mutually exclusive and contradictory premises.

But we are concerned here mainly with the Biblical framework, and with the assumption that the Bible is truly the Word of God as it claims to be. If one starts with the presupposition that God has written the Bible as His own perfect revelation of the origin, purpose, and destiny of the world, then it again is perfectly possible to correlate all the physical data of science and history within that framework. The decision as to which presupposition leads to the most logical and self-consistent system of interpretation must necessarily be based on statistical arguments, and these are notoriously subjective in nature. Thus, in the last analysis, it is a spiritual and moral decision rather than a scientific decision. One can interpret everything in terms of Biblical creationism and catastrophism or in terms of evolutionary uniformitarianism, and all the pertinent data can be understood, at least in broad outline, within the framework of either system. Our concern here is simply to show that the Bible does provide a perfectly sound basis for understanding not only religious truth but also physical processes. It may very effectively serve as a “textbook” of scientific principles within which we can satisfactorily explain all the data of science and history. Whether or not we choose to accept this framework is basically determined by whether or not we want to do so. Those who elect the evolutionary framework do so not because the facts of science require this, but because this is the philosophic thought-structure they desire. “They did not like to retain God in their knowledge” (Romans 1:28).

THE BIBLICAL FRAMEWORK

Those who, by faith, accept the Biblical cosmogony, do so for a perfectly good reason. It is obviously impossible to prove that God does not exist. There is, at the very least, a good possibility that He does exist. If so, it follows that all things are His creatures. The very minds with which we attempt to develop logical thought-structures are created by Him and must operate within the limitations which He has set upon them. It is therefore necessary, if we would understand anything of the true origin, purpose, and destiny of the world and of ourselves, for us to look to God for His own revelation of these things. God can only be known as He wills to be known.

The Bible claims, in numerous ways, to be God’s unique revelation. It was accepted as such by Jesus Christ, who also claimed to be God incarnate, and who vindicated His claim by His uniquely perfect life, His atoning death, and especially by His glorious bodily resurrection from death.

The Bible, with this perfect claim to absolute divine authority does very clearly establish a framework of interpretation within which men are expected to formulate their understanding of the data of science. It is most reasonable and most gracious of God so to do, since it is quite impossible for man, with his study of present processes, to know anything for certain about the prehistoric past or the eschatological future. Only God can know these things, and we are able to know the truth about these matters only through faith in God’s statements concerning them. Therefore, the Bible-believing Christian goes to the Bible for his basic orientation in all departments of truth. The Bible is his textbook of science as well as his guide to spiritual truth.
In its very structure, in fact, the Scriptures provide fundamental perspective on the entire Bible-science question.

The word Bible means simply book, and it is significant that the first mention of book in the Old Testament speaks of the “origins of Adam” (Genesis 5:1), and the first mention of book in the New Testament speaks of the “origin of Jesus Christ” (Matthew 1:1) . The true book, therefore, by implication, is concerned essentially with the first Adam and the second Adam, and the relation between the two. It is also meaningful that the final mention of book in the Bible is in Revelation 22:19, speaking of the “book of this prophecy” and the “book of life,” with a grave warning against tampering with the words of the Book.

The word science is essentially synonymous with knowledge, and is so used in Scripture. The first mention of knowledge in the Bible, in Genesis 2:9, is in connection with the “tree of knowledge.” One might paraphrase by saying that God warned man against partaking of the “tree of science.” There were to be prescribed limits within which man was to exercise dominion over the world; for his own good, he was not intended to venture outside these bounds and know in an experimental fashion the “science of good and evil.” By contrast, the first use of knowledge in the New Testament, in Luke 1:77, speaks of the “knowledge (Greek, gnosis) of salvation,” and the final mention speaks of the “knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (II Peter 3:18).

It is instructive also to compare the words knowledge and wisdom. The former has to do primarily with awareness of facts, whereas the latter has to do with interpretation and correlation and explanation of facts. They are in general parallel to what we mean by our technical words science and philosophy. This also corresponds with their usage in Scripture. In the New Testament knowledge is normally the translation of the Greek gnosis or epignosis. In one passage (I Timothy 6:20) it is actually translated, in the KJV, by science, referring to the opposition of “science falsely so-called.” Wisdom, in the New Testament, is translated from the Greek sophia, which, when compounded with the Greek for “love of,” and transliterated into English, becomes “philosophy,” the “love of wisdom.” It is significant that the only time the actual word philosophy is used in the Bible is in Colossians 2:8, which warns: “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”

True knowledge and true wisdom, which, is to say, science and true philosophy, must come from God alone, and therefore must conform to His framework of revealed Truth. The wise man said: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,” and he also said: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10). The Apostle Paul, in a tremendous doxology, shouted: “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen” (Romans 11:33-36).

And he also emphasized that in Jesus Christ, the Living Word of God, “are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). Not only religious knowledge, but all knowledge; all the treasures of science and true philosophy are hid in Jesus Christ, who is the Creator and Sustainer of the physical universe!

It is not only legitimate then, but absolutely mandatory, for the Christian to depend implicitly on the scientific and philosophic framework revealed in Holy Scripture if he is to attain a true understanding of any of the factual data with which science deals, and their implications. It is not surprising at all, then, when we find that the Bible does speak rather explicitly about basic principles in every area of science.

THE PHYSICAL SCIENCES

We shall consider science under two very broad categories, the physical sciences and the life sciences, the latter including also the so-called social sciences. The physical sciences include such disciplines as chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology, hydrology, and the like. The life sciences include biology, psychology, anthropology, sociology and others.

As far as the physical, or inorganic sciences, are concerned, perhaps the most fundamental fact concerning them, long ago revealed in Scripture and only recently acknowledged by modern science, is that the physical world is basically nonphysical in its ultimate essence. The mechanics of the universe can only be comprehended, and then only vaguely, in terms of non-mechanical, mathematical concepts.
The Scriptures have made it quite clear that the physical universe was created ex nihilo and is fundamentally spiritual in essence. For example, Hebrews 11:3 states: “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” Some might object that the Greek word for worlds really here means ages. It probably can mean both, but in view of the modern recognition of the universe as a space-matter-time continuum, it would clearly be correct to speak of either space or matter or time or all of them as having been created by the word of God. And the basic “stuff” of this continuum is most definitely not “apparent” to the physical senses.

The same truth is revealed in Hebrews 1:2-3: “By his (God’s) Son he made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power . . . ” Thus, by power, by the Word, all things were made, and all things are upheld. Jesus Christ, through the continual outflow of His limitless divine energy is thus sustaining all the material stuff of the universe which He had once created. Here is clearly spelled forth the modern scientific truth of the equivalence of matter and energy. Here also is revealed the ultimate source of the mysterious nuclear forces, the binding energy of the atom. One might also refer to Colossians 1:16-17 for the same teaching.

As far as the laws or processes of the physical universe are concerned, these all devolve upon two extremely broad and powerful principles, the so-called first and second Laws of thermodynamics. Let it be emphasized that, if there is really such a thing as a law of science, these two principles meet that definition. There is no other scientific law supported more fully and certainly by more numerous and meaningful lines of evidence than are these two laws. All physical processes (and all biologic processes, for that matter) involve the interplay of two basic entities called energy and entropy. One could say that any event occurring in space and time is a manifestation of some form of exchange of energy. The particular event or process basically is just this transformation of one or more forms of energy (kinetic or motion energy, electrical, chemical, light, heat, sound, electromagnetic, nuclear, or other forms of energy) into one or more other forms.

In this process, the total energy remains unchanged; no energy is either created or destroyed, although its form may and does change. This is the first law of thermodynamics, the law of conservation of energy. This law has been validated on both the cosmic and sub-nuclear scales and is a truly universal law, if there is such a thing. And, since energy really includes everything, even matter, in the physical universe, it is as certain as anything can possibly be, scientifically, that no creation of anything is now taking place in the universe, under the normal conditions which science is able to study.

But in the process, some of the energy is always transformed into non-usable heat energy, and thus becomes unavailable for future energy exchanges. The concept of entropy has been developed to describe this phenomenon, entropy being a measure of the unavailability of the energy of the system or process. The second law of thermodynamics describes this by stating that there is always a tendency for the entropy of any closed system to increase. Or, in more general terms, the second law states that there is always a tendency for any system to become less organized. Its disorder or randomness tends to increase. If isolated from external sources of order or energy or “information,” any system will eventually run down and “die.”
These laws are basic in every scientific system or process. As far as science has been able to show, they are universal in scope, with no exceptions known. They were only discovered and validated by science, however, about a hundred years ago, after much uncertainty and controversy.

If men had been willing to develop their scientific systems on the basis of Biblical presuppositions, however, it should have been quite obvious all along that the basic physical processes were those of conservation and decay, as now formalized in the statements of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The Bible does not, of course, state these principles in the mathematical symbols or technical jargon of modern physics but the basic truths are quite clearly enunciated.

The conservation principle is strongly emphasized in the summary statement at the end of the period of creation, when the Bible says: “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his works which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made” (Genesis 2:13; italics added).

This statement is as clear as it could possibly be in teaching that God’s creative acts were terminated at the end of the six days. Whatever processes He may have used in creating and making, all His work ceased when God rested on the seventh day. Nothing is now being created and this is what was finally formalized by science in the first law of thermodynamics.

The most significant implication of this fact, for modern philosophers, is that it is therefore quite impossible to determine anything about certain creation through a study of present processes, because present processes are not creative in character. If man wishes to know anything at all about creation time of creation, the duration of creation, the order of creation, the methods of creation, or anything else his sole source of true information is that of divine revelation. God was there when it happened. We were not there, and there is nothing in present physical processes which can tell us about it. Therefore, we are completely limited to what God has seen fit to tell us, and this information is in His written Word. This is our textbook on the science of creation!

Present processes are those of maintenance or providence. Not only is nothing being created but also nothing is being destroyed. He is “upholding all things by the Word of his power.” By the same omnipotent Word who created all things, “the heaven and the earth which are now, are kept in store” (II Peter 3:7).

But we have already noted another very significant characteristic of all such present processes. It is true that nothing is being destroyed, but it is also strangely true that everything tends to become less useful. This is the second law of thermodynamics, the law of entropy increase, which states that the natural tendency is toward increasing disorder and randomization. Energy tends to become less available for useful work, and the process can only be maintained by a continual influx of fresh energy from outside the system itself. Everything tends to grow old, to wear out, or to run down. There is a universal tendency toward decay and death. And who cannot help but sense that this state of affairs, universal and inexorable though it seems to be, is somehow undesirable and abnormal in a universe created by a Holy and Omnipotent Creator?

But this is all explained and long anticipated in Scripture, which attributes it to the entrance of sin into the world. At the end of the creation and making of all things, the Bible says that “God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31; italics added). There was no disorder, no lack of harmony, no decay and, above all, no death in the world as originally made by God. For the Bible believing scientist, this can only mean that any evidence he finds in the present order of things, or in the records of the past, that indicates disorder and struggle, suffering, decay, and death, must necessarily be understood as entering the world after (not before or during) the six days of creation.

Specifically the Bible tells us that this happened as a result of the sin of the first man, Adam, who had been designated by God as master of the earth and everything in it. When he sinned, God pronounced a curse on both Adam and his dominion. “Cursed is the earth for thy sake” (Genesis 3:17). And from that day on, as the Scripture says: “The whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now” (Romans 8:22). The whole world, both the heavens and the earth, and all that in them is, are “waxing old, as a garment” (Hebrews 1:11). (HMphd)
