Whether I’m a scientist major because I like to make connections or whether I like to make connections because I’m a scientist major, finding links between ideas, facts, causes, and effects brings me joy. As you already know, my writing ministry here is all about making connections—especially between a biblical text and a scientific discovery as reflected in my prior articles. Please read my achived articles.
There’s something electrifying, both literally and figuratively, about making these connections. For me, one such “lightbulb” moment occurred during my first-ever reading of Genesis 1.
This breakthrough moment had to do with a nagging question about life’s history. Since my early years in grade school I had wondered why the fossil record showed amazing advancement, new life-forms emerging one after another especially from the Cambrian explosion onward, but then stopped abruptly. Why would this robust process come to a screeching halt with the advent of humans? None of my teachers or textbooks could say.
As I read the Genesis account of creation, the answer jumped off the page. This biblical passage described God’s step-by-step introduction of new life-forms, from plants to various kinds of animals to the first humans. Then He stopped making new creatures. Suddenly I realized, “Here is an explanation. This narrative offers the solution to a great puzzle of life’s history!”
That connection made an eternity of difference in my life. And it was just the first of many that eventually led me to surrender my heart, soul, mind, and strength to the Creator and Savior.
I hope you can recall some of these “lightbulb” moments in your life, when a question connected with an insight or when a mystery linked up with a plausible resolution. Consider how such connections have impacted you since then.
It started for me with a Gideon Bible. Through that Bible I met Jesus Christ. Through talking about Him, I met a friend at Caltech. Through that friend I came to a Bible study. Through that Bible study, I also found a church.
Through the people at church, I learned to tell my story. I learned that God could use even a socially backward scientist to do the work of an evangelist. And this work has connected me to wonderful teammates—including you.
I’m convinced God wants to work more and more through direct and deliberate connections. And that is exactly where you come in. I’m asking you to be a connector for people who are frustrated and confused and looking for answers as I was.
Talking to God while believing for an answer, and you shall hear from God and know that it is He.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,
that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
1 John 4:6
We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
