MENTAL HEALTH – PART 2 – MIND ACTION VS THE DISEASE MODEL

Watch this VIDEO  (9-mins)

A recent WHO study on psychiatric disorders found that developing nations experience better recovery from major mental issues, notwithstanding restricted general access to medications as compared to developed nations like the USA, UK and Denmark [1]. In fact, the developed nations had worse recovery rates, despite their “first class” psychiatric medications and modern mental health care. Likewise, in Western Lapland (northern Finland), an ongoing, large-scale research project on schizophrenia has indicated that people diagnosed with a severe mental illness can experience long term recovery without the use of psychiatric drugs [2]. Individuals can also overcome addictions without psychiatric drugs. In the early 2000s, the National Epidemiological survey (NESARC) showed that 43000 Americans (75% of addicts) had overcome their addictions by themselves and how drug addicts give up habits by themselves more easily than alcoholics [3]. Most people get over addiction through CHOICE – quitting is the rule!

Clearly we can and do triumph over mental health issues. Unfortunately, due of the clinician illusion, in which sickest subset that physicians see are generalized in regards to the overall population, mental ill-heath issues like addiction, schizophrenia and depression are made to seem hopeless [4]. In the developed world, the “disease” model of mental health, which sees mental illness as physically-based and often permanent, has prevailed over the view that mental illness is based in the mind, is temporary and can be overcome.

The disease model of mental health is derived from the medical model of illness. Allopathic medical doctors are trained to diagnose pathology, or disease. They are trained, in other words, to look for what is wrong. This viewpoint is useful in a great number of contexts (e.g. physical trauma or diabetes), but not so helpful in mental health. Indeed, we are only beginning to understand how the mind and brain function—this is one the greatest and most exciting frontiers in science today. Many psychiatrists, however, diagnose mental illnesses according to the unscientific “psychiatric bible”: the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). The DSM content is produced by small committee, and is influenced by drug companies, who use the DSM to manipulate scientific data to construct diseases that will be “cured” by their drugs, thereby exponentially increasing their profits while controlling “problematic social behavior” [5]. From the 1970s drug companies have largely marketed their products as anti-psychotic, anti-depressive, or anxiolytic (anti-anxiety)—cures combating a particular disease, notwithstanding the lack of evidence for chemical imbalances or other pathologies related to mental illness [6]. What these drugs predominantly do is mask symptoms and produce altered mental states, similar to tranquilizers that temporarily dumb normal biological functions [7]. These drugs create chemical imbalances [8].

In fact, while proponents of the disease model often claim that today we have reduced the stigma associated with mental health issues, the DSM defines criteria for “diagnoses,” which can stigmatize an individual and lead to the loss of income, purpose, family, community, health and even death [9]. In some cases, the criteria change depending on public opinion. Homosexuality, for example, in earlier manual was considered a mental disorder, is now considered normal behavior [10].

Even in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, there has been serious push-back against the disease model. One recent example is the BBC Stress test, one of the largest studies of mental health to date, which saw the biggest predictor of mental health problems as “rumination”: the tendency to dwell on negative events for too long [11]. Rumination is clearly a mental process—it is concerned with thinking. The antidote to a negative mental process therefore should be a positive mental process, not a physical one such as medication. Dr. Peter Kinderman, a professor at Liverpool University, a prominent clinical psychologist and the primary investigator in this study has expressed the urgent need to “abandon the disease-model of mental health care.” [12] Kinderman’s concerns were recently echoed by a group of prominent British psychiatrists, led by Pat Bracken, who published an article in the British Journal of Psychiatry arguing “that psychiatry needs to move beyond the dominance of the current, technological paradigm.” [13]

Dr. Leaf, following a similar research path, has also demonstrated, using her research on the power of mind-action in changing the brain, and the bible, that mental disorders are primarily based in the mind (see the section above). Since the early 1980s (when the DSM-3, the first diagnostic manual to promote the diseased model of metal health, was in use), Dr. Leaf has demonstrated the effectiveness of mind action techniques (which are thought-based) in overcoming the negative effects of disease labels such as TBI, dementias, movement disorders, autism, aphasia, and learning disabilities (see the section above).

Even though medication has its place, Dr. Leaf has shown, both scientifically and biblically, that the mind is where the action is determined and focused, and that persistent mind-action, especially when coupled with God’s Word, is able to stimulate the brain and the rest of the body, leading to increased health and vitality. As it says in the New Testament, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.” (3 John 2). Everything relies on your soul, which is your mind, prospering. Indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “…a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” [14] God gave us an incredible mind, one that is able to cope and prosper with all of life’s circumstances, and it is His hope that we realize the potential for health inside all of us.

The First Humans Developed Food-Processing Technology

In a previous article I wrote about a recent archeological discovery that proved humans living along the shore of the Sea of Galilee cultivated wild cereals as early as 23,000 years ago.1 I explained that given the rapid and dramatic climate fluctuations during the last ice age (12,000–120,000 years ago), this crop cultivation evidence showed that the earliest humans were no less inventive and industrious than we are. What held them back was climate instability, not a lack of motivation or intellect. The discovery also answered skeptics’ challenges about the credibility of statements in Genesis 4 concerning the technological achievements of the earliest humans.

Now, another archeological discovery, in a location more than 1,000 miles distant from the former, establishes an even earlier date for human agricultural industry. In the Grotta Paglicci cave, an archaeological site located in southern Italy, a team of five anthropologists and archeologists recovered a grinding tool that was used for processing oat flour.2 Wear-trace analysis of the quantitative distribution of starch grains on the surface of the grinding tool confirmed its use as a pestle grinder.

In studying individual oat grains recovered from the grinding tool, the team observed that the grains were gelatinized and either swollen or partially swollen, indicating “physico-chemical changes that normally occur after thermal treatments.”3 That is, the humans using the tool “thermally pretreated” the grains, meaning they engaged in some kind of roasting of the oat grains before they ground them.

What makes this archeological discovery especially significant is that the research team obtained an accurate carbon-14 date for the grinding tool. The tool was recovered from sublayer 23A in the cave for which another research team established a calibrated carbon-14 date of 32,614 ± 429 years ago.4

This discovery establishes that humans living more than 32,000 years ago, in spite of rapid and dramatic climate changes, were processing the seeds of plants to obtain flour and “developed targeted technologies for complex processing of the plant portions before grinding.”5 This flour record currently ranks as the most ancient evidence for complex food processing and establishes that the organizational capacity for processing food plants was operational long before the Neolithic Revolution (circa 12,000 years ago). This discovery further substantiates the Bible’s accounts of the early history of humanity.

The True Vine

If any truth in the world and is in any scripture of the bible, than translating to that context is the super truth. After meditating on all of the scriptures a manifestation shall come which is harmonious and long lasting. The Word of God is more needed today than ever. The Word of God has not lost its power. Love is still the most important entity of the world.

The true vine as spoken by Jesus can receive drafts, and the drafted branch shall flourish. From the Word of God we learn that God laid a stone in the essence of things (Isaiah 28:16); a proven cornerstone; a sure foundation. The true vine is rooted in this foundation. The stone laid in the essence of things is God’s Perfect Righteousness giving perfect order which demonstrates His purpose to every soul. His purpose is in the His Works that makes people believe on whom He has sent; His Son.

John 15 King James Version (KJV)

15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Trump Begins To Show True Colors

By Will Myers

Trump has begun showing his true colors. He now says that he would reduce corporate taxes because they are suppose to be the highest of any nation. The truth is that this is only true without all of the loopholes and deductions available to corporations. The average corporation pays at the rate of 12% after loopholes and deductions; the lowest of all nations; far below the 40% quoted by Trump. Be afraid of Trump because he is a Republican Capitalist-Imperialist who is also a fascist, and no-good for the typical family of America.

I have been a staunch critic of Donald Trump, but let me give him reverend for standing up for our faith in God and the Word Of God in the bible.

Now, here I go on Trump again. He appears to be the big tent maker for the Republican Party, clearing the way in the jungle of politics. The Republicans have done nothing for the pass 8 years, except oppose Obama. It was a miracle that Obamacare passed.

Trump has at least led the charge of the light brigade, and is posing some form of a republican platform. They have literally stood for nothing for the pass 8 years, and prior they were only surrogates of big business allowing the raiding and rape of our economy. It is my belief that in the end Trump and his cohorts plan to relegate the hourly workers to peons. After all, he is one of the worlds leading capitalist who appear to have imperialistic desires. Believe me, all mega rich republican capitalist features are the same color and they fly in the same flock. The stripes of a tiger don’t change its color. Capitalist pay workers the lowest wages as possible without causing a rebellion; their goal are profits, and they are not friends of the workers.

As a test for friendship, if you are being laid off your job so that the corporation can make more profits, than if lucky enough to get into the office of the top capitalist just ask him to keep you working for only two more months because your son need a life saving operation and your wife is dying of cancer. You are going to get a big smile and a “good luck” while ushering you out of his office, and usually a security guard is waiting for you at your ex-boss’s door to usher you out of the building. Most of the time you shall also get a good luck from the security guard. The difference from the security guard saying good luck and your ex-boss is that the security guard really meant it. Your ex-boss only said it as a formality. You have just entered the twilight zone of the profit making machine. They can be billionaires, and won’t give you one dollar. They are not your friend; a friend would have tried to help with every loss dollar that he possesses.

When it comes to management of a corporation only think when you get a pat on the back, and they say we can’t give raises this year, only think to self “you are going to deal with my LABOR UNION.” It’s going to come out very soon that Trump is anti-labor as his true colors began to fly, and will stand again any labor union.

Strengthening the Case for Firstborn Stars

In a previous article, I described how a key feature of the biblically predicted big bang creation model is its deduction that the firstborn stars will initially be comprised of just three elements: 76 percent hydrogen, 24 percent helium, and a trace amount of lithium. The failure of astronomers to detect such metal-free stars is often cited, especially by young-earth creationists, as proof that the big bang creation model has been invalidated.

As I explained in my previous article, in the context of the big bang creation model, pristine firstborn stars must be at least 13.4 billion light-years away. Currently, no operating telescope possesses the power to image individual stars at this vast distance. I then described the discovery of three very old stars that are so extremely lacking in metals that astronomers established that they must be firstborn stars. Over the course of their 13-billion-year-plus history, these formerly metal-free stars have had their atmospheres very lightly polluted by the interstellar medium, which aligns with big bang creation model predictions.

Now, a different team of astronomers has revealed further observational evidence for firstborn stars that shows them exhibiting characteristics consistent with the big bang creation model. In a recent issue of the Astrophysical Journal, a team of nine European astronomers reported on their spectroscopic measurements on a faint, very distant Lyman-alpha emitter.1 Lyman-alpha emitters are very young, typically low-mass galaxies that are aggressively forming massive stars. The high formation rate of massive stars results in the emission of a strong Lyman-alpha spectral line (1215.67 angstroms) that, because of the great distances of Lyman-alpha emitters, is redshifted into the visible part of the spectrum.

The team targeted the Lyman-alpha emitter known as Cosmos Redshift 7 (CR7). Its redshift of 6.604 places it 12.96 billion light-years away. Using spectral instruments on the Keck telescopes and the Very Large Telescope, the team determined that CR7 possessed two distinct stellar populations. The spectra on the two populations were consistent with one being made of Pop III stars (firstborn stars) and the other of Pop II stars (second-generation stars). Using the Hubble Space Telescope, the team demonstrated that the two populations in CR7 were spatially separated from one another. The team concluded that the spatial separation in the two populations was “consistent with theoretical predictions of a Pop III wave, with Pop III star formation migrating away from the original sites of star formation.”2

This second, independent confirmation of the existence of firstborn stars—manifesting the characteristics predicted in the big bang creation model—should satisfy big bang critics who have insisted that astronomers’ failure to detect such stars falsifies all big bang models. The truth is that big bang creation models have passed every achievable test that has been thrown at them. These recent discoveries of Pop III stars count as one more trial that big bang models have overcome. That the Bible predicted the essential features of big bang cosmology thousands of years before any astronomer even hinted that the universe might possess such features firmly establishes the predictive power of the Bible and consequently its divine inspiration, inerrancy, and authority.

Finding the Firstborn Stars

The big bang creation model—which the Bible uniquely described thousands of years before any astronomer did—predicts a hierarchy in star formation. Since the big bang creation event results in the universe’s ordinary matter being composed of 76 percent hydrogen, 24 percent helium, and a trace amount of lithium, the firstborn stars, at least initially, will be composed of these three elements.

Are Firstborn Stars a Myth?

A remaining challenge to the biblically predicted big bang creation model is that astronomers have yet to detect a star that is completely devoid of elements heavier than lithium. A few atheists and all young-earth creationist scientists have pointed to this lack of evidence to assert that the big bang model has failed. For example, in his book Refuting Compromise Jonathan Sarfati writes, “The total absence of these stars counts as a falsified prediction of big bang cosmology.”1

Astronomers respond to this alleged failure by explaining that the big bang creation model predicts that firstborn stars would be undetectable. In big bang creation models, the first stars would have formed more than 13.4 billion years ago. This means that if we want to observe them in their initial state, we must measure the spectra of individual stars more than 13.4 billion light-years away. Presently, no telescope exists with the power to measure the spectra of individual stars at that distance.

Predicting the Attributes of Firstborn Stars

All stars larger than several times the Sun’s mass explode at the end of their nuclear burning and, thus, salt the interstellar medium with their ashes. The more massive the star the faster it burns up its nuclear fuel and the sooner it explodes. Thus, the largest of the first generation stars relatively quickly pollute the interstellar medium. The second generation of stars incorporates these ashes when they form. These second generation stars compose the majority of stars in the universe. About 2 percent of their composition is comprised of elements heavier than hydrogen, helium, and lithium. Third-generation stars incorporate the ashes of exploded second-generation stars. About 3 percent of the composition of third-generation stars is comprised of elements heavier than hydrogen, helium, and lithium.

Astronomers refer to third-generation stars as Population I (Pop I) stars, second-generation stars as Population II (Pop II) stars, and first-generation stars as Population III (Pop III) stars. The Sun is a Pop I star. In big bang cosmology, life is only possible on a planet orbiting a Pop I star.

Some big bang creation models predict that all Pop III stars will be supergiant stars and will accordingly go through their entire burning phase in just a few million years or less. In these models all the still-shining Pop III stars are more than 13.4 billion light-years away and are consequently inaccessible with current telescope technology. However, many other big bang creation models predict that at least a few Pop III stars will not be supergiants. These stars with much lower masses can burn for billions of years. Therefore, they may be close enough that astronomers can detect them and measure their spectra.

However, these old Pop III stars will not be in their initial pristine state. Over their several-billion-year burning history their stellar atmospheres will have accreted a small quantity of heavy elements from the interstellar medium. This medium will be polluted by the ashes of exploded supergiant Pop III and supergiant Pop II stars. Yet, for low-mass Pop III stars that reside in regions of space where the density of stars is sparse, the pollution level will be so extremely low that there will be no doubt that astronomers are observing an old Pop III star (a.k.a. a Pop III survivor) rather than any kind of Pop II star.

Astronomers Locate Three Firstborn Stars

After a long and diligent search, astronomers have discovered three of these Pop III survivors. The one most deficient in heavy elements is SMSS J031300.36-670839.3(SM0313). Roughly 75 percent the Sun’s mass, SM0313 is 13.6 billion years old, making it the oldest known star with an accurate age determination.2 Compared to the Sun, it has less than 30 millionth the density of iron.3 While iron was undetectable in the spectrum of SM0313, astronomers were able to detect calcium. SM0313 possesses 18.2 million times less calcium per unit mass compared to the Sun.4 This measure permitted a calculation of its iron abundance, which is 38 million times less iron per unit mass than the Sun.

The other two Pop III survivors, HE 1327-2326 and HE 0107-5240, respectively possess 500,000 and 250,000 times less iron per unit mass than the Sun.5 The astronomers focused on iron and calcium abundances since lighter elements, such as carbon and magnesium, are influenced by binary mass transfer and heavier elements are much too rare.

A team of Japanese astronomers placed these iron and calcium abundance measures into a cosmological context by developing a detailed theoretical model. They investigated the change of iron abundance on the surface of Pop III survivors through accretion from the interstellar medium in the framework of hierarchical star formation.6Their calculations showed that Pop III survivors can accumulate up to 1/100,000th as much iron per unit mass as the Sun. It would be impossible for any Pop II star to possess so little iron. On this basis they concluded that any star possessing more than 100,000 times less iron per unit mass than the Sun must be a Pop III survivor.

Rather than big bang cosmology being refuted by the supposed lack of Pop III stars, it is now vindicated. The observational measurements and theoretical calculations described here establish that Pop III stars really do exist. When the James Webb Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes with mirror diameters exceeding 100 feet become operational, there will be a high probability of astronomers detecting not only many more Pop III survivors but also newborn Pop III stars in their initial pristine state.

The Martian: Surviving on the Red Planet

Make no mistake about it—Mars is an extremely hostile place for life. And a new movie called The Martian, which is set to release October 2, seems to understand just how difficult it can be for humans to visit Earth’s neighbor.

Based on a 2011 science fiction novel by Andy Weir, The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney (Matt Damon), an astronaut stranded on Mars seeking to communicate his dire situation with Earth and survive long enough for rescue. One major aspect of surviving relates to food. Watney has only the food brought from Earth (roughly a month’s supply) yet rescue will take a few years. On Earth, we would expect Watney to forage through the abundant plant and animal life for what can be safely eaten (like Tom Hanks’ character in Cast Away)—but on Mars, where no detectable life exists, foraging is not an option. Consequently, Watney must grow his own food, but even that option poses considerable challenges.

While Mars hosts a fairly large amount of water, currently that water is mostly frozen underground and contains lots of salt. At minimum, the water must be thawed and purified before it has any value for drinking or growing food. Even the relatively abundant soil on Mars shows little past or present evidence of water, and contains none of the microbial life necessary for growing plants here on Earth. Furthermore, the radiation in the environment, as well as the chemical and physical conditions, render the surface of Mars completely inhospitable. This means that any farming must take place indoors, shielded from all the hostile elements. Of course, Watney must live in such shielded conditions anyway, but having to farm inside reduces his living space considerably. I look forward to seeing how the movie addresses all these concerns.

The other aspect of The Martian that intrigues me relates to its portrayal of Watney’s indomitable spirit to survive as well as his tremendous resourcefulness to overcome almost impossible obstacles. People consciously think about how to solve problems and what steps are necessary to survive. They also recognize the consequences of today’s actions and actively plan for the future. In fact, difficult obstacles make great plot lines for movies (as noted in this xkcd comic).

This self-awareness is part of what separates humanity from the animals, and it seems like The Martian places a strong emphasis on the value of human life.

Naturally, this movie will include some scientifically questionable ideas, but it will also provide a great opportunity to discuss spiritual matters. Consider taking time to see the movie and to start a conversation about the amazing capacity of Earth to support life or the evidence in the universe that humans are created in God’s image.

Is a Global Flood Scientifically Possible?

Christians have long debated the extent of the flood recorded in Genesis 6–9. Typically, old-earth creationists (OEC) suggest it was a local flood, whereas young-earth creationists (YEC) argue for a global flood. Reasons to Believe holds to the position of a universal flood (one that God used to destroy all of humanity) that was not global in geographic extent. Since humanity had not yet spread to cover Earth, the flood did not need to cover the entire globe.

So which interpretation is correct? One interesting aspect of the answer relates to a more specific question: Does Earth have enough water to cover the whole planet?

The total amount of water on Earth is less than a quarter of what would be required to cover the entire planet. This claim may seem unrealistic until one realizes that Earth is actually quite water poor. Although 71 percent of the planet’s surface is covered by oceans, only about 0.1 percent of Earth’s volume is water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the volume of all the water on Earth, including salt and fresh water, icecaps, groundwater, and atmospheric water, amounts to 332,500,000 cubic miles. Earth’s average radius is 3,959 miles. The volume of a sphere is given by the formula 4/3πr3 where r is the sphere’s radius. Earth’s volume is then about 259,900,000,000 cubic miles. The volume of atmospheric water is a little over 3,000 cubic miles, negligible in this calculation. A sphere containing all of Earth’s water would be about 860 miles in diameter, approximately the distance between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Topeka, Kansas, (for a cool graphic, see here). Or suppose Earth’s surface was completely smooth and all of Earth’s water was in a spherical shell covering the planet’s surface. That shell would be approximately 1.7 miles thick. So, is this enough to cover the Earth’s mountainous terrain?

Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, is 29,029 feet (or about 5.5 miles) above sea level. The average elevation of all the continental landmasses is 2,755 feet (about 0.52 miles).1 From this information, we can make a first-order approximation that the volume of water needed to cover Mount Everest, including all the water presently on Earth, is about 1,400,000,000 cubic miles. Therefore, the volume of water currently on Earth is only about 24 percent of the volume needed to cover Mount Everest.

But are the elevation of Mount Everest and the general topography of Earth the same as they were in the days of the flood? Mount Everest is thought to be rising about 4 millimeters per year (although some geologists believe it may actually be shrinking). If this rate of rising was constant over the last few thousand years, Mount Everest would have been about 125 feet lower 10,000 years ago and 500 feet lower 40,000 years ago, which would make almost no difference in the calculations above. Plate tectonic activity is thought to move Earth’s continental plates on the order of 1–10 centimeters per year. Again, over a 40,000-year period this would amount to between 0.2 and 2.5 miles, which is not enough to change continental configurations significantly. Thus, it seems reasonable to conclude that Earth’s topography and the elevation of Mount Everest have been relatively constant for the last 40,000 years.

Many of those holding to a global flood model argue that Earth’s mountains were much smaller and its oceans much shallower in pre-flood times and suggest that the flood itself resulted in massive uplifting of the mountains and carving out of the oceans (see here and here for two examples). There are two reasons to doubt this theory. First, the tectonic forces required to cause such massive mountain- and ocean-building events in a single year would have been so violent and caused such turbulence in the waters that the ark would likely have been torn apart or capsized. Instead, Genesis 7:17–20 speaks of the waters increasing and rising greatly but makes no mention of violent or turbulent motions in the seas. Similarly, Genesis 8:1–5 tells us the waters receded, once again without mention of violence or turbulence. The 17 most violent earthquakes in the world since 1900 caused massive tidal waves, huge numbers of deaths, and almost incalculable property damage, according to theU.S. Geological Survey. Yet the net effect on the world’s topography was negligible. Second, if a global flood occurred within the last 10,000 years, it would have left substantial geologic evidence. The U.S. Geological Survey2 lists the world’s largest floods during the last 15,000 years or so, and the evidence indicates that none were global in scope.

In order to reconcile a global flood view with the current scientific evidence, one must accept a number of difficult-to-believe claims. Either (1) the global topography was similar to today’s, but the water used to cover the globe no longer resides on Earth (or is hidden from our discovery); or (2) the water on Earth today was sufficient to cover the globe, but tectonic forces completely altered the topography of the globe (in a way not detectable to us). Without limiting what God can do, it seems more prudent to recognize that the Bible describes a flood that judged all humanity but did not cover the entire globe.

MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health is of great concern in our nation as the number of people diagnosed with depression approaches 20% in our country. The U.S. spends $42 billion a year on anxiety disorders alone and one in four middle-aged adults take prescription drugs to fight the effects of panic, anxiety and depression. What is driving the epidemic? Is it out of our control or do we play a role in the way our minds interpret reality?

Dr. Caroline Leaf joins Q Commons on September 24th to speak on “Why Thoughts Matter.” She is a cognitive neuroscientist who develops processes to help people change their thinking and behavior: if your thinking is toxic, your communication and actions can be toxic too. Her presentation at Q Commons will delve more deeply into how our responses to the issues and people around us can be traced back to our thought processes. TOXIC CHOICES – ‘POISON IN THE PASTA!’

Written by Dr. Caroline Leaf

Like an expert chef, we can choose to put only tasty thoughts (Phillipians 4:8) and feelings into our cells. Perhaps when we recognize that putting toxic thoughts into our brains is like putting poison into our pasta, we will understand why God exhorts us to control our thought life; putting healthy thoughts into our minds is akin to that dash of fresh basil on top of the simmering bed of rich, luscious lasagna. Moment by moment, each and every day, as we think, choose and wire thoughts into our brains, we are poisoning or strengthening our immune system, body and mind, which will, whether we want it to or not, have an impact on our spiritual development!

The fact of the matter is that when we meditate on good things, and not on toxic, poisonous things, we increase the gamma waves in our brains, which means we increase our attention, memory and learning capacities. Research has shown that with healthy thinking we build up portions of our brain that produce happiness, just as healthy, fresh ingredients can make a pasta so much more delicious. Moreover, science also shows that meditating on good things, like what the bible teaches or a good classic, improves moods in a far superior way than antidepressants, and with no poisonous side effects! In truth, when it comes to aging, research has shown that older people with healthy attitudes and NOT toxic poisonous ones lived seven and a half years longer! Now that is my kind of pasta!

Additionally, the thoughts we put into our brains have powerful genetic effects on the production of healing proteins in our bodies, just as the ingredients we use in a pasta dish will affect our health. What you think, feel, and believe constantly changes the genetic expression and chemical composition of your body on a moment-by-moment basis. High stress levels – the result of poisonous toxic thoughts- suck biochemical resources away from cell repair and kill brain cells, as would a dish of poisonous, bitter pasta. With over 1400 chemical reactions and more than thirty hormones shifting chaotically in response to toxic thinking, what was good can become really, really bad–a poisonous concoction, indeed!

The expert chef understands that he can control the quality and ingredients of his food, and he understands that what he makes will not just affect himself but those individuals who are relying on his expertise, and are looking forward to a good meal. The same can be applied to our brains: when you begin to understand that with every feeling and thought you are performing epigenetic and genetic engineering on your DNA, you realize you actually have a degree of leverage over your mental and physical health that can make a critical difference to your life…and the lives of those around you.

When you “bring your thoughts into captivity to Christ Jesus” and “choose life”, you intervene consciously with positive emotions, thoughts and prayers. Besides making you feel good, these healthy “ingredients” benefit your body, modulating your gene expression towards a better life, mentally, physically and spiritually. This peak is different for everyone and we shouldn’t compare ourselves. Random life situations and events are generally beyond our control, but we can control our reactions, which are thoughts, to these situations. So, no matter how sick or how many problems we currently have, we have the ability to CHOOSE our thoughts with their embedded feelings, and select those that support peak mental, spiritual and physical vitality.

Bon appétit, and remember: no more poison in the pasta!

Personal Relationship With God Who Came Wrapped In Flesh

Our Infinite God has told us His works which are finite for us to believe. God’s work is to make us believe in His Son, Jesus, in the world.

Will Myers's avatarIntelligent Design and Biblical Scripture

The works of God in all manners and fashions is to make one believe on who He sent. All religions hang on aspects of creating faith in God, but some major religions veer from the Son of God, Jesus, giving honorable mention to a prophet or even a master meditator.

The greatest commandment from God is to love God with all of your heart, body, and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself; for God is love. All other laws hang on the commandment of love. How can we have a personal relationship with God Whom is our Heavenly Father through His Son, Jesus, without love.

Humans begun their existence being exposed to the physical laws created by God. These laws are immutable such as gravity. One can not will the changing of gravity in any form or fashion. It is absolute. The physical laws not only suggested the nature of God…
