Blood Moons: An End-Times Sign? (Part 2 of 2)

Popular Bible preacher John Hagee has authored a book and produced a movie by the same name, Four Blood Moons (in theaters March 23 only). On the film’s website the San Antonio megachurch pastor states, “The heavens are ‘God’s billboard.’ He’s been sending signals to earth, and we haven’t been picking them up.” In part 1 of this series, as an astronomer I analyzed those “signals,” a series of four (tetrad) total lunar eclipses that supposedly ushers in prophetic activity ahead of the return of Christ. Now, as a student of Scripture and as one who believes in premillennial eschatology, I convey my primary, biblical criticism.

Biblical Concerns

1. Earth phenomena might be responsible for lunar darkening. Three biblical passages mention the Moon taking on a blood-like appearance: Joel 2:31, Acts 2:20, and Revelation 6:12. All three state that both the Moon and the Sun take on a darkened appearance. These passages also imply that the darkening will be visible to all of humanity. However, there is no darkening of the Sun during a total lunar eclipse. Furthermore, total lunar eclipses last only a couple of hours and are visible to a fraction of humanity.

Eight other biblical texts describe the darkening of the Moon’s light, but not the blood color: Ecclesiastes 12:2; Isaiah 13:10; Ezekiel 32:7–8; Joel 2:10; 3:15; Matthew 24:29; Mark 13:24; and Revelation 8:12. In all these passages not only is the Moon’s light darkened but that of the Sun and stars as well. In Revelation 8 the darkening of the Sun, Moon, and stars is preceded by a third of the world’s forests and grasslands being burnt up and a huge mountain set ablaze. Ash from volcanic eruptions and from forest and grass fires both reddens and dims sunlight, moonlight, and starlight.

I personally have seen the reddening and dimming effect of forest fire smoke several times. Not only does the Moon look blood-red but the Sun and stars do as well. I have seen the noontime Sun dimmed to such a degree by forest fire smoke that my environs were as dark as night.

The worldwide injection of dust into the atmosphere offers a consistent and satisfactory explanation for all the Bible passages describing the dimming or reddening (or both) of the Moon’s light. It explains, too, how the entire human population would notice the phenomenon and that many people would begin to fear God as a result. The same cannot be said for Hagee’s lunar eclipse hypothesis.

2. “Great lights” benefit animals but say nothing about prophecy. Another interpretive concern lies in the treatment of Genesis 1:14. Hagee and others (such as Mark Biltz of El Shaddai Ministries and Larry Huch of Larry Huch Ministries) appeal to this verse as justification for looking to the Moon for signs of God’s interventions in human history.Genesis 1:14 (and 1:16) does say that the two great lights (the Sun and the Moon) will serve as signs. However, it says that from creation day four forward they will serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years, not that they will serve as signs to mark prophesied events.

Throughout creation days one, two, and three, light from the Sun and Moon penetrated Earth’s atmosphere, but because of overcast skies at that time, creatures on Earth’s surface could not make out the form of the bodies responsible for the light. On creation day four Earth’s atmosphere first became transparent. Now creatures on Earth’s surface could discern the positions of the Sun, Moon, and stars in the sky. Knowledge of those positions enabled them to determine what part of the year and day they were in and, thus, determine when they should feed, reproduce, migrate, hibernate, and so on. Support for this interpretation stems from the observation that all the life described in Genesis 1 before creation day four does not require knowledge of the positions of the Sun, Moon, and stars to perform their life functions, but all the life described after creation day four in Genesis 1 needs that knowledge to regulate their complex biological clocks.

3. Numerous world events have yet to occur. Finally, Old Testament prophecies regarding the second rebirth of Israel indicate that several events must yet take place before anyone can conclude that the Great Tribulation, the time of the end that precedes Christ’s return, is at hand. A sampling of these events (again, from a premillennial perspective) includes:

While one can argue that these political and economic events could happen in the very near future, so far none have occurred.

Rather than get caught up in the fulfillment of end-times prophecy, I believe Christians should take comfort in Christ’s promise to return and should remain busy promulgating the Gospel. He will return to Earth once his followers have taken the good news of salvation to all the people groups of the world and have raised up many disciples. Instead of waiting for a sign in the sky, we can make his return imminent by completing the task he assigned us. His Holy Spirit promises to help.

Why Do Christians Study Science?

Why Do Christians Study Science?

From Bob Miller:

lf one believes unequivocally that God created our universe, why would one even consider, no less research and study, scientific explanations for the origins of the universe or alternative ideas such as its not having a beginning?

****

Science is possible only because our universe is an orderly place governed by natural laws, which—when properly understood—are predictive and reproducible. This understanding of the universe had its genesis in the Judeo-Christian Scriptures, as can be seen by contrasting the early pagan worldview with the Judeo-Christian worldview.

The early pagans, including the Greeks and Romans, believed the world was ruled by irrational gods with human characteristics like spite and jealousy. Some cultures even believed there was a demigod associated with every rock and tree. Such a world was a terrifying place; people felt they had to pray or sacrifice continually to appease capricious deities. Although Aristotle is credited with the first systematic formulation of science, he did not tempt nature; he “didn’t do silly experiments, but proved truth with impeccable logic.”1 Yet Aristotle’s logic failed to pass muster when the scientific method based on experimentation was developed; and we do not believe it was an accident that this development coincided with the Protestant Reformation.

By contrast, the Bible claims God created the universe and “fixed laws” govern the cosmos (Jeremiah 33:25, NET). Genesis 1 illustrates how God created the universe and life in a structured, systematic, logical, progressive manner. And knowing that the universe is orderly and predictable is the first step in exploring natural law—or doing science.

Some psychologists claim humans have a “science-fostering intelligence,”2 an innate curiosity about the world around them. If so, its first evidence was in the Garden of Eden, when God awakened Adam’s curiosity by bringing animals to him and instructing him to name them (Genesis 2:19–20, NASB).

But the essence of your question is why would a Christian—a person who believes in a personal creator-God who “works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28, NIV)—bother to investigate the natural world? The answer may be found in Genesis 1:27–28 (NASB):

God created man in His own image…male and female He created them….And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over…every living thing that moves on the earth.”

God designed humans to be His agents on Earth by acting on His behalf to make a “very good” world better. Those who believe in the Judeo-Christian God pursue science—including cosmology—to learn more about our creator-God and to follow his command to make the world a better place. Among countless examples, Jesuit priest and scientist Georges Lemaître (1894–1966) first proposed the expansion of the universe, which validated the biblical description of the cosmos (see Isaiah 40:22) and was key to big bang cosmology. And it was a devout Christian, Michael Faraday (1791–1867), who doggedly pursued the discovery of electromagnetism guided by Romans 1:20 (NIV):3

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.

We believe secular scientists follow this same innate, God-given desire—even though they may not recognize its source.

Blood Moons: An End-Times Sign?

Four Blood Moons, a theatrical one-night event scheduled for March 23, 2015, and based on Texas megachurch pastor John Hagee’s New York Times bestseller of the same name, has garnered attention. I’m featured briefly in the film as a skeptic of Hagee’s central claim that a sequence of four total lunar eclipses signifies that “world history is about to change,” bringing about the rapid fulfillment of a biblical end-times prophecy. I’m also included in a 20-minute panel discussion on the movie that was recorded at Hagee’s San Antonio headquarters.

Hagee knew in advance my views on his claims and I’m impressed that he would allow a “skeptic” of his view to participate. For that, he is to be commended.

The biblical basis for the four blood moons claim as an eschatological event appears in Joel 2:31, which states, “The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” The scientific basis rests on the fact that often during a total lunar eclipse, the Moon, as seen from Earth’s surface, takes on an orange or red hue (see figures 1 and 2).

My greater concern centers on biblical, rather than scientific, misinterpretations of the blood-moon sign, and I will address those in part 2. First I will address the science and history of lunar eclipses.

Scientific Concerns

John Hagee, Mark Biltz of El Shaddai Ministries, and Larry Huch of Larry Huch Ministries note in their books1 and television broadcasts that in 1493–94, 1949–50, and 1967–68, a series of four (tetrad) total lunar eclipses occurred on the dates for the Jewish Passover and Tabernacles festivals. Each of these eclipse tetrads occurred within a year or two of significant events in Jewish history. In 1492, Columbus landed in America, which later became a haven for persecuted Jews. In 1948, the nation of Israel was founded. In 1967, the Six-Day War brought the Old City and its temple site under Israeli control. Thus, the authors claim that another eclipse tetrad on the dates of the Passover and Tabernacles festivals in 2014–15 is an unmistakable sign that an important end-times event is upon us.

All three authors insist that an occurrence of four total lunar eclipses on the Passover and Tabernacles dates is rare and unexpected. As an astronomer, I beg to differ. First, lunar eclipses are common. Two to five lunar eclipses, including partial eclipses, occur every year. The number of total lunar eclipses ranges from zero to three per year.

Second, lunar eclipses can occur only when the Moon is exactly at the full moon phase. Likewise, the dates for the Passover and Tabernacles festivals are determined by when the Moon is at a full moon phase just after the spring equinox (Passover) and just after the fall equinox (Tabernacles). Lunar eclipses are most frequently spaced about six months apart; so it isn’t surprising that eclipse tetrads occur on the Passover and Tabernacles dates.

Third, unlike solar eclipses, total lunar eclipses can be seen as total from anywhere on Earth’s night side. Since age ten, I’ve resided in locations where 34 total lunar eclipses were visible and have personally witnessed over a dozen.

Fourth, an orange-red hue is the most common color of a totally eclipsed moon. The illumination observed on these occasions is sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere and refracted into Earth’s shadow. This light appears reddish because red light is of longer wavelength than blue, green, and yellow light and penetrates Earth’s atmosphere more easily. If the part of Earth’s atmosphere that refracts light on the eclipsed moon is exceptionally overcast or smoky, the eclipsed moon will be much dimmer and more brownish. The normative color, however, is a copper or reddish hue.

Historical Concerns

Hagee, Biltz, and Huch do acknowledge that lunar eclipses are common. They claim the sequence of four consecutive total lunar eclipses is rare. But why four? I imagine they would’ve been equally impressed had the events of 1492, 1948, and 1967 corresponded with a sequence of two, three, or five sets of total lunar eclipses. Varying the number in a sequence raises the probability of finding a match with significant historical events dramatically. I found no statistical significance in the claimed correlations2 because of: (1) the subjective nature of what ranks as a significant historical event; (2) the ± 2-year date matches; and (3) the possible variability of the number in the sequence.

Moreover, total lunar eclipse tetrads occurred on Passover and Tabernacle festival dates in AD 162–63, 795–96, 841–43, and 860–61, during which no outstanding events in Jewish history happened. Finally, of the 16 lunar eclipses that occurred or will occur in 1493–94, 1949–50, 1967–68, and 2014–15, only the first and third in the 1493–94 sequence and only the third in the 1949–50 sequence appeared as blood moons in Israel. For the current tetrad, the only location where all four eclipses will be visible as blood moons is a small region in northern Baja California, Mexico.

Unlike Biltz, Huch, and others, Hagee remains ambiguous about what kind of event qualifies as significant both to Jewish history and to biblical end-times prophecy. His ambiguity virtually guarantees that later this year he can claim that his hypothesis has been proven correct. Has there ever been a year since 1948 when some momentous historical event has not occurred in Israel? Assuming a premillennial eschatological perspective and given that the book of Ezekiel prophesies much about Israel’s second rebirth, Hagee won’t have difficulty in finding a correlation. I can name several significant events since the beginning of 2014: the increasing exodus of Jews from Europe to Israel; the rise of ISIS; Israel’s worsening relationships with Iran and the United States; increasing success and prosperity of Israel’s technology sector; and the need for land to accommodate the rising Jewish population in Israel.

These three men have several “outs” if the 2014–15 eclipse tetrad doesn’t usher in events prophesied in the books of Daniel and Revelation, events that precede the second coming of Christ. Eight more total lunar eclipse tetrads will occur in what remains of the twenty-first century. It is simply a matter of time before a correlation occurs. When that happens, such Bible teachers can adjust and rewrite, but skeptics will not be impressed and the cause of Christ will be hampered. By focusing on what scientific and biblical data we do know, believers can better help humanity and honor Christ.

Dear Will,

Reasons to Believe (RTB) is seeking a Donor Relations Manager to join our team in Covina, California. This team member will play an essential role in helping the ministry pursue all that the Lord has put on our hearts to accomplish in the months and years ahead.

Please take a moment to review the job description below and consider whether you or someone you know may be a good candidate for this position. We are working closely with a fundraising specialist to help us in the hiring process for this position. If you are interested in applying or have a recommendation for us, please feel free to share this job posting and/or send your résumé, cover letter, and compensation requirement to job.rtb@pursuant.com.

Blessings and many thanks for your prayerful consideration,

Hannah Palpant,
Ministry Advancement Director

RTBs Mission and Core Values

RTBs mission is to spread the Christian Gospel by demonstrating that sound reason and scientific research—including the very latest discoveries—consistently support, rather than erode, confidence in the truth of the Bible and faith in the personal, transcendent God revealed in both Scripture and nature.

Our directors and staff have affirmed a set of values and qualities that set RTB apart. While other faithful Christian ministries may share one or more of these same qualities, Reasons to Believe embraces all of them together:

  • A high view of both Scripture and science—because God has given us two books
  • Apologetics for the sake of evangelism—because the Great Commission is ours to fulfill
  • Commitment to application—because intellectual engagement should build faith, not merely win arguments
  • Development of a testable creation model—because the world needs a positive, growing case for faith in a caring Creator
  • Readiness to give reasons (1 Peter 3:15a)—because people have questions and doubts that deserve reasonable, well-researched responses
  • Communication with gentleness, respect, and a clear conscience (1 Peter 3:15b)—because people respond to our attitude as well as to our words

Position description

The Donor Relations Manager (DRM) will report to the Ministry Advancement Director with a focus on connecting the interests and passions of donors with giving opportunities. The DRM will develop relationships, primarily working with major donors and prospects at the major gifts level (five, six, and seven-figure gifts) in support of the organizations vision and support needs. The DRM will engage, solicit, and steward a portfolio of approximately 100 major-gift-level donors by making at least 20 in-person contacts each month. The DRM will also contribute to other strategic fundraising initiatives as part of RTBs development strategy.

Responsibilities:

The DRM will

  • Implement the major gift program for RTB to meet specific funding objectives and will help plan, assist, and evaluate other initiatives as directed, with an emphasis on stewardship.
  • Qualify donor prospects as to their affinity with RTB and its mission and their capacity for giving; set relationship priorities to ensure effectiveness.
  • Serve alongside key executives of RTB as lead solicitor and steward of major donors by developing strong relationships, cultivating continued interest in the mission and financial strength of RTB.
  • Develop meaningful, face-to-face relationships with donors, making appropriate in-person requests for support.
  • Assist in fundraising events that engage and cultivate support for RTBs vision.
  • Work with program staff to secure project information, create donor offers, and report to donors how their giving made a difference.
  • Maintain thorough records of interactions and contributions in donor database systems.
  • Meet weekly with the Ministry Advancement Director to report on monthly visits, relationship development, relevant activities, and progress toward goals.
  • Be able to travel by land and air at least 50% of the time, with occasional overnight and weekend stays.

Ideal Experience

  • Five or more years of progressive development experience, including at least three years of successful, face-to-face, major gift development experience.
  • Demonstrated success in securing six-figure gifts.
  • A proven track record (supported by references) in building strong donor relationships and achieving revenue goals as a major gift professional.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. (The qualified candidate will be asked to provide communication and writing samples.)
  • Experience in fundraising analytics, specifically understanding how to use data analysis to identify donor prospects, capacity, and giving interests.
  • Skill in using structured major donor prospecting approaches, in applying cultivation and stewardship disciplines, and in using performance-based measurements for success.
  • Strong, active listening and dynamic presentation skills; an enthusiastic spirit with demonstrated experience in sharing vision.
  • Proven ability to contribute as a strategist and to think quickly and creatively.
  • Character traits including humility, genuineness, approachability, integrity, flexibility, emotional resilience, initiative, and confidence; ability to interact with board members and executive staff, as well as major donors.
  • Bachelors degree (required); graduate work, a plus.
  • Experience with at least one donor database system.
  • Personal passion for evangelism and for generating investment in RTBs vision.

Codification Of An Unified Field Equation; Depleting Nature’s 5 Forces Into One Equation

Einstein, the famed physicist, worked for 17 years searching for the unified field equation which would reduce the 5 forces of nature (Electronic, Magnetic, Gravity, Weak Nuclear, and Strong Nuclear force) into one force (Unified Force) without discovering the equation. Einstein was a Determinist, meaning that any well defined problem has a well defined answer. As I have stated prior, I believe that quantum mechanics is the equation because I also believe that the field has the spacial matter-potential relationship, and the field can only be represented by a one potentiality (Spirit) prescription. I feel that a good simile is from the relationship of spirit (potentiality) and matter.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The Spirit is in the heavens and live as a Potentiality without a body (no matter) while the world is composed of matter containing many bodies. Jesus Christ filled with God’s Holy Spirit can predict outcomes of such physical systems and spiritual interplay. A codification (equation) in mathematics predicts outcomes which are rigid such as Force=mass x acceleration and also predicts probable occurrences such as most likely, maybe, or 50-50 chance of event occurring in a spiritual sense.

Only spirits live in heaven, and there is an abyss between the physical world and heaven. Although, there is a connection between the two, and that connect is the Lord Who has God’s Holy Spirit.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. (Zion means in the essence of things; by above scripture God placed logic for our intellect in the essence of things. Nothing is random or only by chance.)
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

It’s my belief that the solution to the unified field theory has already been codified. Quantum Mechanics which gives probabilities called expectation values…expect the occurrence of an event half the time; 50-50 chance value. To say that a deterministic equation for the Unified Field Theory shall never be found would be sticking one’s neck out into eternity. Although, I would go as far to say that the probability of discovering the equation is smaller than not finding the equation.

Knowing that Einstein, the genius physicist, couldn’t devise a prescription after 17 years of work, I have chosen the Lord Jesus Who can tell me anything. It’s His call. God always provide inspiration and what’s needed in order to complete an assignment given by Him.

Nehemiah 9:6

Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man  beholding  his natural face in a glass:
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

 Psalm 19:1

[ The Perfect Revelation of the Lord ] [ To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. ] The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.

Let the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is Judge. Selah
God is continually illustrating His Truth; the more man searches for the true; the more man uncovers the source who is God, our Creator. Man searches and increases his symbolic conscience while at the same time rediscovers the original source which has always been.
“Science is blind without religion; religion is lame without science.”; Einstein.
“I want to know the thoughts of our Creator”; Einstein.
LET THE CODIFYING CONTINUAL.
EVIL COMPLICATES, BUT GOOD IS HIDDEN IN SIMPLISTIC BEAUTY.

When The Blinding Light Of Truth Hit One Knows The One Universal Potentiality

Since the rapid growth of secular humanism they have claimed the scientific method as their proof of the truth. As a result, it has become popular with the secularist to ask believers to prove God, knowing that the Believers can not prove God; no one can prove God to you; not even His Son, Jesus. It takes faith to please God because He is infinitely beyond mankind. A mathematical truth is that if something is considered infinite by an observer, than no matter how the observer transforms toward the infinite source the observer and the source remain infinitely separated. There is no closing the gap between the Infinite God and  finite mankind. We can only please God and receive His Love. Jesus said that God is His Father Who reveals to him all mysteries.

By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Referring to the Truth of God, when one is born again, and the Light is turned on, than the Light is self proof to the blessed individual; that person knows God forever. There are physical truths and spiritual truths; in the process of life both the physical and the spiritual processes are congruent; they are both continually in harmony with each other. The scriptures reflect this believe in the book of Mathew; ”

Matthew 16:19; “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 18:18; “Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
The psychological process of thinking and making decisions is a process of loosing and binding on a minute scale. One can suddenly realize God Who is on a cosmic scale; this is a binding process. The process of seeking a higher concept is a loosing process in the physical sense and in a spiritual sense. When one has been born again the experience of Oneness always happens. The person always testifies of one Potentiality without even sensing a distance, evolving potential; in a sense the one Potentiality is an absolute that confirms God, the Absolute. Jesus is our Lord and Savior Who God sent to each of us in order get anyone and everyone in the mode of loosing and binding on the Earth as His Son did for those who believes in Him. In this sense, Jesus brought the Light to those who begin thinking as Jesus, the Son of God, for the Father and the Son are One; always functioning in agreement on the Earth and in the Heavens. The one Potentiality sheds Light from the trinity of our Heavenly Father, Son of God, and God’s Holy Spirit.

John 8:12 ; “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

John 1:9; “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”
“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
The Universal Potentiality is sensed by everyone. Einstein sought the universal Potentiality under the discipline of physics which is called the Unified Field Theory. Man seeks the One Mind of our humanity driven by our sense of the one Universal Potentiality, and man is establishing the One World Government. God has designed our mind to need a unit for our logical process. Scientist and philosophers did error when they did not accept the Son of God (Uspace); the source of the Light.

Were Dinosaurs Reptiles?

From Jerry in Los Angeles, CA
I’m reading your book Navigating Genesis. On page 66 you say, “Given that dinosaurs were reptiles, not mammals…” Wait a minute! I thought it was shown decades ago that dinosaurs were not reptiles. They were warm-blooded and some were feathered. I thought it was common knowledge that dinosaurs were not reptiles. Am I wrong?

****

Some scientists have speculated that a few of the dinosaur species were warm-blooded and that some dinosaurs were feathered. However, these claims are not yet scientifically validated. Scientists do know that dinosaurs were not mammals. Dinosaurs, like reptiles today, laid eggs. Mammals have placentas.

Scientists also know for certain that many of the dinosaur species could not have been warm-blooded. The sheer size of the larger land-dwelling dinosaurs rules out the possibility. Additionally, many dinosaurs had small mouths, which means they could not have consumed enough food to maintain blood temperatures significantly different from the ambient temperatures of their environments. Thus, they could not have been warm-blooded.

The problem with identifying dinosaurs as feathered creatures is that land-dwelling dinosaurs overlapped birds in the fossil record by more than 70 million years. In some cases the “feather evidence” is ambiguous. In other instances, it is not possible to determine whether the fossil find is a dinosaur or a flightless bird.

For more on whether or not dinosaurs were warm-blooded, check out “Were Dinosaurs Warm-Blooded?” (podcast). For more on whether or not dinosaurs had feathers, check out “Feathered Dinosaur or Flightless Bird?” (article).

Could “Fresh” Dino Tissue Survive for Millions of Years?

From Nate in Fullerton, CA:

Recently I’ve been referred by some young-earth creationist friends to a couple of articles about a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth and a Triceratops-type horn that both underwent an autopsy showing (relatively speaking) “fresher” organic material. Does this affect the time line for the existence of dinosaurs? I appreciate the thought put into this and would love support on how to respond to maintain the old-earth perspective.

****The claim made by young-earth creationists is that discovery of soft tissue evidence in dinosaur fossils proves that these fossils cannot be millions of years old. Soft tissue, they insist, cannot be preserved for that long of a time period.

Paleontologists who have studied these fossils disagree. It is true that such evidence usually decays into an unrecognizable form in just a few hundred thousand years or less. However, if a sample is isolated from any exposure to bacteria and oxygen, then the soft tissue evidence easily can be preserved for over a hundred million years.

Tissue inside a tooth or a horn, where that tooth or horn is quickly buried by mud or volcanic ash, will be effectively cut off from bacteria and oxygen. Thus, it is not at all surprising that soft tissue evidence inside the tooth and horn was preserved for tens of millions of years. If you read the peer-reviewed science papers in which these discoveries were announced, you will note that the authors do not express shock at their findings.

Are Dark Matter and Dark Energy Just “Props” for the Big Bang?

From Gavin:

I always enjoy and profit by listening to RTB’s scholars discussing and interviewing others on various creation-science, theological-philosophical, and biblical topics. I am interested to hear what you have to say about the following. A commentator on a young-earth creation (YEC) website said,

I am very impressed with the way YEC cosmologists have broken out of the clearly defective Big Bang-Inflation scenarios, which have to invoke the imaginary fudge factors of “dark matter” and “dark energy” (for which there is no scientific evidence) to keep the Big Bang scenario credible to the cosmological community and the largely uninformed public. As Spike Psarris has pointed out…scientists generally acknowledge that they get to invoke the Tooth Fairy only once to semi-justify a theory with problems and the Big Bang community has had to invoke the Tooth Fairy twice.

My question is, are mainstream cosmologists using “dark matter” and “dark energy” to prop up inherent problems of the big bang model of the universe’s origin?

****

I understand that some people take issue with inflationary big bang models, but to say that dark matter and dark energy were invented without any scientific justification (i.e., invoking the Tooth Fairy) paints a distorted picture. Although much about dark matter and dark energy remains to be discovered, both stand on a strong evidential basis.

The concept of dark matter readily flows from observations of our galaxy (and many others) and a straightforward application of Newtonian gravity. Measurement of an object’s orbit uniquely determines the amount of mass inside that orbit.1 For decades, astronomers have measured the orbits of Milky Way stars and stars in other galaxies. They used this information to determine the amount of mass in each respective galaxy. They have also added up all the mass from stars emitting detectable light (any form of electromagnetic radiation) for those galaxies. In every instance, astronomers find that the mass needed to explain the orbits exceeds the mass of the visible stars. Astronomers refer to the difference between required mass and visible mass as dark matter (you can charge scientists with a lack of creativity in naming things). Using a similar process, scientists find abundant evidence for dark matter in the vicinity of the Sun as well as in gigantic clusters of galaxies.

Strong evidence also supports the existence dark energy, which was discovered more recently than dark matter. One interesting measurement—independent of the methods that discovered dark energy in the first place—pertains to the large-scale structure of the universe (or how galaxies are clustered together).

Obviously, scientists don’t have a complete and final understanding of the cosmos. Thus, room for alternative models exists, even models without dark matter or dark energy. However, those competing models must explain the current evidence at least as well as inflationary big-bang models do, and right now non-big-bang models fail to meet that standard.

  1. An interesting outcome of this principle is that Earth’s mass has no effect on its own orbit. Thus, an instantaneous increase or decrease in Earth’s mass by any factor would not change the planet’s orbit relative to the Sun in any way.
